Fabricated Tool For Holding Air Compressor Drive Gear While Tightening Nut On Compressor Crankshaft{0600,1803}

Usage:

3406E (5EK) Truck Engines

The illustration provides the dimensions for a fabricated tool for holding the air compressor drive gear while tightening the nut on the end of the air compressor crankshaft. The following is a list of items required for fabricating the tool:

Item 1. Black Pipe (5.5 in OD, 5.0 in ID X 2.5 in long)
Item 2. Two 2H-6488 Bolts (1/2- 13 THD X 5 in)
Item 3. One Hex Socket Set Screw (5/8- 18 THD X 1.5 in)
Item 4. One 6B-6683 Nut (5/8- 18 THD)

Dimensions for fabricated tool. Black Pipe (1). 2H-6488 Bolts (2). Hex Socket Set Screw (3). 6B-6683 Nut (4). (A) = 54.61 mm (2.150 in). (B) = 52°. (C) = 1.57 mm (.062 in). (D) = 88.90 mm (3.500 in). (E) = 63.50 mm (2.500 in). (F) = 17.48 mm (.688 in). (X) = Weld.

Modify the tip of set screw (3) as shown in the illustration. Weld two 2H-6588 Bolts (2) in position on black pipe (1) as shown in the illustration.

Tighten the nut on the end of the air compressor crankshaft as follows:

1. Use a shop vise to hold the air compressor.

2. Put the air compressor drive gear in position on the air compressor crankshaft.

3. Put the fabricated tool in position on the air compressor to prevent the drive gear from turning.

4. Use a 6V-9118 or 1U-7095 Socket (30 mm, 3/4in drive) to tighten the nut that holds the drive gear on the air compressor crankshaft. Tighten the nut to a torque of 462 ± 54 N·m (340 ± 40 lb ft).

The former air compressor on 3406 Truck Engines had a tapered shaft. The nut on these compressors was tightened to a torque of 135 to 165 N·m (100 to 120 lb ft) for "Marsden" or "Castle" nuts and 200 to 345 N·m (220 to 254 lb ft) for metric thread.
