Special Electronic Control Module (ECM) Used With J1939 Data Link And Eaton Autoshift Transmission{1901}

Usage:

3176B (9CK) Truck Engines With J1939 Data Link And Eaton Autoshift Transmission

Reference: Electronic Troubleshooting, 3176B And 3406E Diesel Truck Engine, Form No. SENR5582-01.

A limited number of 3176B (9CK) Truck Engines have been built with a special 120-8974 ECM and a 123-1387 Adapter Wiring Harness that is required with that special ECM. Illustration 1 shows the 123-1387 Adapter Wiring Harness installed on a 120-8974 ECM. The special ECM has a J1939 Data Link that is required with an Eaton Autoshift Transmission. To date, all engines with the 120-8974 ECM have been installed in motor coaches.

Troubleshooting this system is identical to the standard troubleshooting procedures outlined in the Reference with the following exceptions:

1. The personality module cover is located on the back face of the ECM. This requires removing the ECM to service the personality module (Service P/M 120-8954). FLASH programing is suggested if personality module update is required (FLASH file 120-8952).

2. Use the included wiring schematic (Illustration 2) to identify the correct pin location during any troubleshooting step that references ECM connectors P1/J1 or P2/J2.

3. Whenever troubleshooting a problem, do not forget to thoroughly inspect and consider the adapter wiring harness.

4. The vehicle speed/timing calibration connector P24/J24, located in the engine wiring harness near the cylinder head, is not used. Instead, it is located in the harness adapter. This is the reason for exceptions 5 and 6 that follow.

5. When performing timing calibrations, insert the timing calibration probe into the two-pin DT connector in the adapter wiring harness instead of the two-pin DT connector P24/J24 located in the engine harness near the cylinder head. Remember this when performing a timing calibrations as per P-602 Steps 11, 13, and 15. (Pages 196 - 198 in the Reference).

6. P-506: Vehicle Speed Circuit Test should also be modified. Remember the vehicle speed/timing calibration connector P24/J24 is located in the adapter wiring harness and not the one in the engine harness for Step 1 and Step 5. Skip Step 8 and Step 9. This part of the circuit is not used with this ECM.

7. P-517: SAE J1922 Powertrain Data Link Test This system uses the SAE J1939 Data Link instead of the SAE J1922 Data Link. There is not a diagnostic code associated with the SAE J1939 Data Link (SAE J1922 Data Link has 249-11 powertrain Data Link Fault). To determine if the SAE J1939 Data Link is communicating with the engine, use ECAP status screen 6. The troubleshooting guide indicates this screen is for the SAE J1922 Data Link, but it is also for the SAE J1939 Data Link. All status screen messages are identical for both the SAE J1922 and SAE J1939 Data Links.
