Introduction
This Special Instruction provides the parts and procedure to replace the torque converter lip seal. The 270-1705 Lip Type Seal is being replaced by the 363-2112 Lip Type Seal .
This procedure needs performed only if a transmission leak has been identified in the torque converter housing. Rust may also be found on the drive adapter.
The procedure is effective with the following machines:
- CX31 (S/N: B3X660; D9F650; D9R305; E2R311; EBW1075; PTW319; PTX381)
- CX35 (S/N: W3X363)
- CX31-P600 (S/N: PFW483)
- CX35-P800 (S/N: TRJ381)
The procedure is adaptable to the following machines:
- CX31 (S/N: B3X322-659; D9F1-649; D9R1-304; EBW1-1074; E2R1-310; PTW1-318; PTX177-380)
- CX35 (S/N: W3X319-363)
- CX31-P600 (S/N: PFW1-482)
- CX35-P800 (S/N: TRJ1-380)

NOTICE |
---|
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates. |
Procedure to Install Torque Converter Lip Seal
Transmission assembly must be completed up to the torque converter housing in order to use the input shaft as a pilot for the lip seal installation. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, KENR5091 for the correct procedure.
- Use Tooling (A) to install 363-2112 Lip Type Seal (1) .
- Inspect Tooling (A) to ensure that the seal installation tool is in good condition and free of defects (rust, nicks, dings, contamination and so on). Wipe the seal installation tool clean and make sure that the seal installation tool has been dried completely and is free of oil.
Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before assembly, thoroughly clean tools in cleaning fluid. Allow the tools to air dry. Wiping cloths or rags should not be used to dry parts. Lint may be deposited on the parts which may cause later trouble. Inspect all parts. If any parts are worn or damaged, use new parts for replacement.
- Orient lip seal (1) so that the open side (C) is oriented away from the driving face of Tooling (A) and facing toward the planetary. Be careful not to touch the inside diameter. Inspect lip seal (1) for damage.

- Transfer the seal onto the seal installation tool by aligning the installation sleeve that is inside the seal on top of the seal installation tool. Press the seal off installation sleeve (3) and onto seal installation tool (A) in one motion.
Note: Using one motion will minimize contact with the inner diameter of the seal.

- Discard installation sleeve (3) .
- Wipe torque converter housing seal bore clean and inspect the chamfer and sealing surface for damage.
- Apply a thin film of the fluid that is being sealed to the outside diameter of lip seal (1) prior to installation.
- Install the seal into the torque converter housing using the seal installation tool being sure to pound the seal installation tool evenly. A "ring" sound will indicate that the lip seal is fully seated (all around).

- Clean Tooling (A) after each use, and store the seal installation tool in a VCI bag to prevent rust and contamination.
- Remove 272-7959 Drive Adapter (2) on the torque converter and install a new torque converter drive adapter. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, KENR5091 for the correct procedure.
