- Truck Engine:
- C11 (S/N: KCA1-UP)
- C13 (S/N: KCB1-UP)
Updating the engine software on the C11 truck engine with the serial number prefix KCA and on the C13 truck engine with the serial number KCB may cause a J1939 Device Not Responding (231-12) diagnostic code.
The diagnostic code may be caused by the October 2007 software release. The new software release includes a dedicated switch input for the parking brake signal. A loss of battery power after updating the software may cause the Engine Control Module (ECM) to reprogram the parameter for the parking brake switch to the default setting of "J1939 input". The Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) version 2008A and older versions do not recognize the configuration for the parameter of the parking brake switch.
If you have the October 2007 318-XXXX or newer software version and have a Check Engine Light (CEL) on with a J1939 Device Not Responding (231-12) active diagnostic code:
- Make sure that you are using Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) 2008B or newer.
- Verify that the parameter for the configuration of the parking brake switch is programmed correctly. The parameter should be programmed to NONE in most cases.
No other troubleshooting is needed to resolve this issue.
