Procedure for Powering the Battery Charger Continuously{751B}

Usage:

C15 C5L
Engine:
C15 (S/N: C5L1-UP)

Introduction

ReferenceSchematic, KENR5075, "C15 Generator Set with EMCP3 Electrical System"

The problem that is identified below does not have a known permanent solution. Until a permanent solution is known, use the solution that is identified below.

Problem

Units are being ordered without a charging group for the battery. Battery chargers are setup from the factory in order to initiate a charge only when the engine is not running. This creates a problem when the engine is running and nothing is charging the batteries. A change to the wiring needs to be made. This will allow the battery charger to remain on at all times, regardless of the engine status.

Solution

Perform the following procedure in order to power the battery charger continuously if a charging group is not present:

  1. Activate the emergency stop on the unit.

  1. Disconnect the battery cables.

  1. Isolate the auxiliary AC power supply.

  1. Determine if the unit has a jacket water heater. If the unit has a jacket water heater, perform Step 5 through Step 7. If the unit does not have a jacket water heater, perform Step 8 through Step 10. For a complete schematic, refer to the media number that is listed above.

  1. Locate wire 140 in the control box. Remove wire 140 from the constant voltage charger.

  1. Remove wire 135 from the bottom of fuse 17.

  1. Install a new wire in the previous positions that are listed in Step 5 and Step 6. Thus, make a connection between the constant voltage charger and the fuse 17. Proceed to Step 11.

  1. Locate wire 140 in the control box. Remove wire 140 from the constant voltage charger.

  1. Remove wire 136 from the bottom of fuse 17.

  1. Install a new wire in the previous positions that are listed in Step 8 and Step 9. Thus, make a connection between the constant voltage charger and the fuse 17. Proceed to Step 11.

  1. Connect the battery cables.

  1. Reset the emergency stop for the unit.

  1. Clear all faults in order to allow the engine to return to service.

By making a connection between the constant voltage charger and fuse 17, the battery charger will be powered continuously, even when the engine is running.
