Introduction

The problem that is identified below does not have a known permanent solution. Until a permanent solution is known, use the solution that is identified below.

Problem

Exhaust heat shields may be difficult to install, and result in a gap between the exhaust flange and the 415-9455 Exhaust Bypass. This gap allows exhaust heat to be directed over the exhaust bypass and can result in exhaust bypass failure.

Do not operate or work on this product unless you have read and understood the instruction and warnings in the relevant Operation and Maintenance Manuals and relevant service literature. Failure to follow the instructions or heed the warnings could result in injury or death. Proper care is your responsibility.

Caterpillar is aware of this problem, but a permanent repair has not been identified. As an interim solution follow the repair instruction given below.

Ensure that soft wrap heat shield (1) completely seals against the hard heat shields around 309-8404 Exhaust Elbow and the 415-9455 Exhaust Bypass.
