Introduction
If the machine is ordered with the Axle Oil Cooler, the hardware should already be installed. The axle oil cooler is not sold as a retrofit kit.
Verify Installation Status
Verify that the Axle Oil Cooler is installed in Electronic Technician by going to the screen for the transmission Configuration.
In older versions of ET, the configuration screen will read "axle oil cooler fan bypass solenoid installation". The status should show as "Installed".
In newer versions of ET, the configuration screen will read "axle oil cooler installation". The status should show as "Installed".
System Operation
If the system is installed through ET, the axle oil cooler pump does NOT run continuously. The pump turns on and off by a solenoid when either of the axles reach a certain temperature.
When the solenoid that controls the pump turns On, the Axle Oil Cooler pump turns Off. When the axle oil cooler solenoid turns Off or the Axle Oil Cooler solenoid is disconnected, the axle oil cooler pump turns On.
This is done in order to protect the pump. As the fluid in the axles becomes colder the fluid density increases. This can cause damage to the pump, if the pump tries to turn the fluid. The pump should stop turning if the oil is cold. However, if the solenoid has an open circuit, the pump should turn regardless of the temperature. By design, the pump turns On and the pump cools the axles if the solenoid turns off or the solenoid is disconnected.
The solenoid will turn Off and the pump will turn on if the temperature in either axle gets above 50 °C. The solenoid will turn on and the pump will turn off if the temperature falls below 45 °C.
The warning light in the cab will come On if the temperature in either axle gets above 100 °C. The warning light in the cab will turn off if the temperature falls below 95 °C.
You can verify that the solenoid turns on and off in ET by looking at the status of bypass solenoid for the axle oil cooler. If the status of the bypass solenoid is off, the pump will be on and the axles are being cooled. If the status of the bypass solenoid is on, the pump is off and the axles are not being cooled.
The pump will be off and the solenoid will be on for 20 seconds after starting the machine, regardless of the temperature in the axles.
