Exhaust Manifold - Remove and Install

Removal Procedure


NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.


  1. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Cooling System Coolant (ELC) - Change".

  1. Loosen hose clamps (2). Remove coolant hoses from exhaust manifold (1) .

  1. Plug and cap all openings. This helps to prevent fluid loss, and this helps to keep contaminants from entering the system.

  1. Remove coolant hose (3) .

  1. Disconnect harness assembly (5) from the water temperature switch and harness assembly (4) from the water temperature sending unit.

  1. Remove nuts (6) from exhaust manifold (1) .

  1. Remove elbow assembly for exhaust (7) and the gasket.

  1. Remove nuts (8) from exhaust manifold (1) .

  1. Remove exhaust manifold (1) and the gasket.

  1. Position the gasket and exhaust manifold (1) onto the cylinder head.

  1. Apply Tooling (A) to nuts (8). Install nuts (8) on exhaust manifold (1). Tighten nuts (8) in a numerical sequence. Tighten the following nuts to a torque of 14 N·m (10 lb ft): 7, 8, 11 and 12. Tighten the rest of nuts (8) to a torque of 22 N·m (16 lb ft).

  1. Position the gasket and elbow assembly for exhaust (7) on exhaust manifold (1). Install nuts (6) for the elbow assembly for exhaust.

  1. Install coolant hose (3) .

  1. Connect harness assembly (5) for the water temperature switch and harness assembly (4) for the water temperature sending unit.

  1. Connect coolant hoses and tighten hose clamps (2) on exhaust manifold (1) .

  1. Fill the cooling system. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Cooling System Coolant (ELC) - Change" for more information.
