Differential Pinion - Remove and Install - Front and Rear

Usage:

725C2 2L6

Removal Procedure

Start By:

  1. Remove the front drive shaft.

  2. Remove the rear drive shaft.


NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.


Note: The same removal and installation procedure is used for the front differential pinion and for the rear differential pinion.

  1. Drain the differential oil. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, Differential Oil - Change for correct draining procedure.

  2. Attach suitable lifting device to differential pinion housing (2). The weight of differential pinion (2) is approximately 36 kg (80 lb). Remove bolts (1).

    Note: Note the quantity and thickness of shims for installation purpose.

  3. Install two bolts (1) as forcing bolts. Use two bolts (1) to separate differential pinion housing (2) from center housing (3). Remove differential pinion housing (2).

Installation Procedure

  1. Install differential pinion (2) in the reverse order of removal.

    1. Tighten bolts (2) to a torque of 270 ± 40 N·m (199 ± 30 lb ft).

    2. Fill the differential oil. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, Differential Oil - Change for correct filling procedure.
