Transfer Case - Remove and Install - Center Axle

Removal Procedure

Start By:

  1. Remove the front drive shaft.


NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.


Note: The same removal and installation procedure is used for the front differential pinion and for the rear differential pinion.

  1. Drain the differential oil. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, Differential Oil - Change for correct draining procedure.

    Note: Note the quantity and thickness of the shims for installation purpose.

  2. Attach suitable lifting device to transfer case (1). The weight of transfer case (1) is approximately 127 kg (280 lb). Remove bolts (2) and transfer case (1).

Installation Procedure

  1. Install transfer case (1) in the reverse order of removal.

      Note: Use the original shim pack or provide a new shim pack measured to the same thickness as the original shim pack. If original shim pack is not available, use 70 % of a full shim pack.

    1. Tighten bolts (2) to a torque of 105 ± 20 N·m (75 ± 15 lb ft).

    2. Fill the differential oil. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, Differential Oil - Change for correct filling procedure.
