Cat® ET

The Cat® Electronic Technician (Cat ET) Service Tool offers the following benefits:

  • Used to troubleshoot a machine.

  • Runs on a computer with a Microsoft Windows operating system.

  • Not required to view or clear diagnostic codes.

  • Makes determining diagnostic codes easier.

  • Displays diagnostic code information, including history and parameter status.

  • Communicates with electronic control modules (ECM's) over a data link.

  • Requires the tools listed in Table 1.

The following service tools should be used to aid in troubleshooting the electrical system.

(3) 457-6114 Cable AsCA 3 Ethernet FLASH Cable
(4) Current version of Cat®ET software

Reference: Refer to Special Publication, NEHS1032, "Communications Adapter III".

Reference: Refer to Special Publication, NEHS1081, "317-7492 Wireless Radio"

Note: Cat ET is a software program that can be used on an IBM compatible personal computer.

To use Cat ET, order the following materials: Special Publication, JERD2124, "ET Single Use Program License", Special Publication, JEHP1026, "Information and Requirements Sheet" and Special Publication, JERD2142, "Data Subscription". The Special Publication, JEHP1026, "Information and Requirements Sheet" lists the required hardware and the features of the CatET.

Cat ET communicates to the components through Cat Data Link.

For instructions about the use of the digital multimeter, refer to Special Instruction, SEHS7734. The 7X-1710 Multimeter Probe measures the voltage at the connectors without disconnecting the connectors. The probe cables are pushed into the back of the connector along the wire. The 8T-8726 Adapter Cable has a breakout with three pins. The adapter cable is used for measurements in the sensor circuits.

Adaptors

One of the adapters listed in Table 1 is required to connect the computer to the machine.

Reference: For wireless adaptor instructions, see Special Publication, NEHS1081, "317-7492 Wireless Radio".

Reference: For "Comm Adapter III" instructions, see Special Publication, NEHS1032, "Communications Adapter III".

Connectors

Reference: See the following for connector information:

  • For Locations: Troubleshooting, "Electrical Components and Connector Locations" and the machine Electrical Schematic

  • For Sure Seal connector instructions, see Special Instruction, SMHS7531

  • For Deutsch DT connectors instructions, see Special Instruction, SEHS9615

Multimeters

Use a calibrated digital multimeter to test continuity and voltage.

Reference: See the multimeter manual provided with the multimeter.

7X-1710 Multimeter Probes are used to measure voltage at a connector without separating the connection. The probe cables are pushed into the back of a connector along the wire.

The 8T-8726 Adapter Cable has a three-pin breakout and is used for sensor circuit measurements.

Note: Caterpillar recommends the use of a 8T-0500 Continuity Tester and a 5P-7277 Voltage Tester to test a harness. Caterpillar does not recommend the use of a 8T-0500 Continuity Tester or a 5P-7277 Voltage Tester for electronic circuits.
