NOTICE

Keep all parts clean from contaminants.

Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.

Note: The camshaft is in two pieces. Ensure that the camshafts are assembled and installed according to the marks on the ends of the camshafts.

  1. Install Tooling (A) on the flywheel housing. Do not tighten the bolts on Tooling (A).

  2. Attach a suitable lifting device to the front half of the camshaft. The weight of one-half of the camshaft is approximately 74 kg (163 lb).

  3. Install Tooling (B) on the end of the front half of the camshaft.

  4. Ensure that the camshaft and the camshaft bearings are clean. Place clean engine oil on the lobes and the journals of the camshaft. Also place clean engine oil on the camshaft bearings.

  5. Position the front half of camshaft (12) in the engine until Tooling (B) is in the first camshaft bearing.

  6. Rotate camshaft (12) and tighten the bolts for Tooling (A).

  7. Rotate camshaft (12) and insert the camshaft until the camshaft is slightly protruding from Tooling (A).

  8. If the dowel was removed from the front half of camshaft (12), install the dowel. Install the dowel to 22.0 ± 0.5 mm (0.87 ± 0.02 inch) from the surface of the camshaft.

  9. Fasten a hoist to the rear half of camshaft (13). The weight of one-half of the camshaft is approximately 74 kg (163 lb). Install spacer (15) and the rear half of camshaft (13) onto the front half of camshaft (12). Install bolts (14) and tighten to a torque of 55 ± 7 N·m (41 ± 5 lb ft).

  10. Install Tooling (B) and Tooling (C) on the end of camshaft (13).

  11. Rotate camshaft (13) and insert the camshaft into the engine.

  12. Remove all tools. Repeat Steps 1 through 11 for the camshaft on the opposite side of the engine. Then go to Step 13.

  13. Install thrust washers (10) and bolts (9) that fasten the camshaft to the engine.

    NOTICE

If the camshaft is out of time more than 18 degrees (approximately 1/2 of the timing pin is out of the groove), the valves can make contact with the pistons. This will cause damage to the engine. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Camshaft Timing" for more information.

  14. Remove timing pin (16) from the storage position on the side of the engine.

  15. Turn the camshaft until timing pin (16) can be installed through the cylinder block and into groove (17) that is in the camshaft.

  16. Repeat Steps 1 and 15 for the camshaft on the opposite side of the engine.

  17. Remove bolts (19), cover (18), and plug (20).

    Illustration 7g00579263

  18. Install one bolt (19) into the flywheel housing through the hole for plug (20). Use Tooling (D) and a ratchet to turn the flywheel until bolt (19) can be installed through the hole and into the flywheel. This will position the No. 1 cylinder at the top center. Refer to the Service Manual, "Testing and Adjusting Module" for more information.

  19. Place camshaft drive gears (8) into position on both of the camshafts.

    Illustration 9g00579145

  20. Install timing ring (11) and the bolt on the camshaft that is on the left side of the engine. Ensure that the hole in the timing ring is properly seated on the locating pin.

    Illustration 10g00579141

  21. Install plate (7) and the bolt on the camshaft that is on the right side of the engine.

  22. Use the following steps to seat camshaft drive gears (8) onto the ends of the camshafts.

    1. Tighten the bolt for timing ring (11) to a torque of 360 ± 70 N·m (265 ± 52 lb ft).

    2. Use a soft hammer to strike the bolt head for timing ring (11). This will help seat camshaft drive gear (8) on the camshaft.

    3. Tighten the bolt for timing ring (11) again to a torque of 360 ± 70 N·m (265 ± 52 lb ft).

    4. Place an index mark on the bolt for timing ring (11).

    5. Repeat Steps 22.b and 22.c until the bolt for timing ring (11) does not move after tightening the bolt. The marks should stay aligned.

    6. Repeat Steps 22.a through 22.e in order to seat camshaft drive gear (8) on the opposite side of the engine.

  29. Install access covers (2) and tube assemblies (1) on both sides of the engine.

End By:

  1. Install the speed/timing sensor. See the Service Manual, "Electronic Troubleshooting" module.

  2. Install the rocker shaft assemblies and the pushrods.
