NOTICE |
---|
Keep all parts clean from contaminants. Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life. |
- Measure the clearances of the main bearings. See this Disassembly and Assembly, "Bearing Clearance - Check" topic.
- Coat the main bearings with clean engine oil.

Illustration 3 g00612587 Note: The main bearing caps must be installed with the word "FRONT" and the part number toward the front of the engine. Each main bearing cap has a number on the bottom surface and each main bearing must be installed in the corresponding position in the cylinder block.
- Coat lower halves of main bearings (7) with clean engine oil. Install the lower halves of main bearings (7) in main bearing caps (6). Place the bearing caps into position.
- Coat the threads of the bolts for the main bearing caps and coat the underside of the bolt heads with clean engine oil.

Illustration 4 g00612585 - Install the bolts for the main bearing caps. Tighten the bolts in the numerical sequence that is shown in Illustration 4.
- Use Tooling (D) and tighten the bolts to a torque of
190 ± 14 N·m (140 ± 10 lb ft) . - Tighten the bolts for an additional 180 ± 5 degrees (1/2 turn).
Show/hide tableNOTICE Each counterweight is numbered and must be installed in the same position as the corresponding number on the crankshaft mounting pad in order to prevent damage to the crankshaft.

- Ensure that the dowels are in the crankshaft assembly. Install counterweights (8).
Note: Always install new bolts for the counterweights. Never reuse counterweight bolts.
- Coat the threads, the shanks, and the underside of the bolt heads with Tooling (E).
- Tighten the bolts to a torque of
70 ± 5 N·m (145 ± 4 lb ft) . - Tighten the bolts for an additional 120 ± 5 degrees (1/3 turn).

Illustration 6 g00612591 - Use Tooling (C) to measure the end play of the crankshaft. The end play is determined by the thrust plates that are on the center of the main bearing. The maximum end play of the crankshaft is
0.17 to 0.63 mm (0.007 ± 0.025 inch) .
