Installation Procedure

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates. |
Note: For information on the reusability of components of the turbocharger, refer to Guideline For Reusable Parts And Salvage Operations, SEBF8018, "Turbochargers". For information on the salvage of components of the turbocharger, refer to Guideline For Reusable Parts And Salvage Operations, SEBF8071, "Procedures to Salvage Turbocharger Components".
- Inspect the condition of the gaskets. Replace the gasket, if necessary.
- Install the end housing on the cartridge. Tighten the bolts that hold the compressor housing to the cartridge housing to a torque of 7.3 ± 0.5 N·m (65 ± 4 lb in).
- Apply 5P-3931 Anti-Seize Compound to the threads of the bolts that hold the turbine housing to the turbocharger. Install the bolts and tighten the bolts to a torque of 15.8 ± 0.5 N·m (140 ± 4 lb in).
- Apply 5P-3931 Anti-Seize Compound to the threads of the turbocharger mounting studs.
- Position the gasket and the turbocharger (5) to the exhaust manifold.

- Install four locknuts (4). Tighten the locknuts to a torque of 54 ± 5 N·m (40 ± 4 lb ft).
- Tighten clamp (3) .
- Lubricate turbocharger (5) with clean engine oil.
- Connect oil drain tube (2) to turbocharger (5) .
Note: The orientation of the compressor housing may change for some applications when a turbocharger is replaced.
- Connect oil drain tube (1) to turbocharger (5) .
