  1. Apply 5P-0960 Molybdenum Grease on the sleeve bearings in the pin bore at the foot of the boom.

  1. Apply 5P-0960 Molybdenum Grease on the lip type seals in the pin bore at the foot of the boom.

    Note: Be sure that the pin bores in the boom and the frame are clean and free of dirt prior to the installation of the boom.

  1. Fasten lifting straps and a hoist to boom (5). Put the hoist in position in the frame. Be sure that the pin bores in the frame and the boom are aligned with each other. Be sure that the threaded puller hole in pin assembly (12) is clean. Install Tool (A) in the end of the pin assembly. Apply 5P-0960 Molybdenum Grease on pin assembly (12). Use two persons to temporarily install the pin assembly. Use a hammer to drive the pin assembly into position. Do not remove the hoist from the boom at this time.

  1. Slide the boom to one side until the boom makes contact with the frame. Measure the total clearance between the boom and the frame at the pin bore. The total clearance of measurement (a) plus measurement (b) must not be more than 1.0 mm (.04 inch). If the total clearance is less than 1.0 mm (.04 inch) the addition of shims will not be required. If the total clearance is more than 1.0 mm (.04 inch) the addition of shims will be required.

  1. If shims need to be installed between the boom and the frame, remove pin assembly (12). Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Boom - Remove" in this manual. Install the shims between the boom and the frame on the side opposite the cab. Install pin assembly (12). Install retaining bolt (13) and washer (14). Tighten the retaining bolt to a torque of 325 ± 40 N·m (240 ± 30 lb ft). Remove the hoist from the boom.

  1. Install cover (11) and bolts (10) .

    NOTICE

    Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

    Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines.

    Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.


  1. Check the condition of the O-ring seals that are used in the ends of hose assemblies (7) and (8). If the seals are damaged, use new parts for replacement. Install the O-ring seals in the ends of hose assemblies (7) and (8). Connect hose assemblies (7) and (8) .

  1. Connect wiring harness (9) for the boom lights.

  1. If the support pin for the boom cylinders was removed, reinstall the support pin in the boom by hand. Apply 5P-0960 Molybdenum Grease on the pin prior to installation.

  1. Extend the boom cylinders. Fasten a hoist to right boom cylinder (6). Position the right boom cylinder next to the support pin. Extend or retract the rods of the boom cylinders until the pin bores in the rod are aligned with the support pin. Push the support pin into the cylinder rod. Install retainer plate (3) and bolts (2). Disconnect the hoist from the right boom cylinder.

  1. Fasten a hoist to left boom cylinder (4). Position the left boom cylinder next to the support pin. Be sure that the bore in the cylinder rod is aligned with the support pin. Push the support pin into the cylinder rod.

  1. Install the other retainer plate (3) and three bolts (2) .

  1. Lubricate the boom cylinder pins and the pin joint for the boom foot. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual for the correct procedure.

End By: Install the stick. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Stick - Install" in this manual.
