Swing Drive - Disassemble

Start By:

  1. Remove the swing drive. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Swing Drive - Remove and Install" in this manual.

  1. Fasten the swing drive to Tooling (A), as shown. The weight of the swing drive is approximately 115 kg (250 lb).

  1. Remove sun gear (1) from the carrier assembly.

  1. Remove O-ring seal (2) from the ring gear.

  1. Remove carrier assembly (3) from ring gear (4) .

  1. Use the following procedure to disassemble carrier assembly (3) .

    1. Drive spring pin (5) into planetary shaft (6) with a hammer and a punch.

    1. Remove planetary shaft (6), two thrust washers (8) and planetary gear (7) from the carrier.

    1. Remove bearing (9) from the planetary gear.

    1. Remove spring pin (5) from planetary shaft (6) with a hammer and a punch.

    1. Repeat Steps 5.a through 5.d in order to remove the other two planetary gears from the carrier.

  1. Remove sun gear (10) from the carrier assembly. Remove retaining ring (11) from the sun gear.

  1. Use a soft faced hammer to break the seal between the ring gear (4) and the swing drive housing. Remove ring gear (4) from the swing drive housing.

  1. Remove O-ring seal (13) from the swing drive housing.

  1. Remove bolt (12) from the pinion shaft.

    This is the bottom view of the swing drive housing.

  1. Remove nine bolts (14) and the washers that hold cage (15) to the swing drive housing. Remove the cage from the swing drive housing.

  1. Remove lip type seal (16) from cage (15) .

  1. Put the swing drive housing in a press, as shown. The combined weight of the swing drive housing, pinion shaft, bearings and carrier assembly is approximately 95 kg (210 lb).

  1. Support the bottom of the pinion shaft with wood blocks. Carefully press the pinion shaft and bearings out of carrier assembly (17) and the swing drive housing.

  1. Remove carrier assembly (17) from the swing drive housing.

  1. Use the following procedure to disassemble the carrier assembly (17) .

    1. Remove bearing cone (18) from the carrier.

    1. Drive spring pin (20) into planetary shaft (19) with a hammer and a punch.

    1. Remove planetary shaft (19), two thrust washers (22) and planetary gear (21) from the carrier.

    1. Remove bearing (23) from the planetary gear.

    1. Remove spring pin (20) from planetary shaft (19) with a hammer and a punch.

    1. Repeat Steps 15.b through 15.e in order to remove the other two planetary gears from the carrier.

    1. Remove retainer (24) from the carrier.

  1. Remove spacers (25) and (26) from the pinion shaft.

  1. Use a press to remove pinion shaft (28) from bearing cone (29) and spacer (30) .

  1. Remove spring pin (27) from the end of the pinion shaft.

  1. Remove bearing cups (31) and (32) from the swing drive housing.

  1. Remove drain tube (33) from the swing drive housing. The weight of the swing drive housing is approximately 52 kg (115 lb).
