Sidebar Retention Cotter Pin Failure

Problem:
Reference: Service Magazine, SEPD0614, 28 January 2002, "An Improved Retention System is Available for Sidebar Protectors"
This article announced a new retention system for the sidebar protectors, consisting of a pin, two collars and two large cotter pins.
It has been determined that the inside cotter pin can be sheared when loading the buckets. Rocks in the bucket force the pin out, shearing the cotter pin and eventually the protector falls away from the sidebar.
Solution:
A new headed pin has been released to resist this force but parts will not be available until late May 2002. A temporary fix can be administered to the current parts by welding the inside collar to the end of the pin. Preheat the ends to 204°C - 240°C (400°F - 500°F) before welding.
