Problem:

Caterpillar Engineering has recently received reports regarding the use of New Caterpillar Radios with 12-volt voltage converters. The following radios are affected:

173-6530 Radio Group (AM/FM/WB)
173-6532 Radio Group (AM/FM Cassette)

When these radios are left ON after the keyswitch has been turned OFF, the LED backlighting on these radios may flash on and off. The current draw that results from this condition is 200 milliamperes, which, over an extended period of time, can drain the batteries. Older radios have used incandescent backlighting which has not presented this concern. This flashing may occur when the 173-6530 Radio Group (AM/FM/WB) and 173-6532 Radio Group (AM/FM Cassette) are used with the following voltage converters:

119-1733 Converter (Power)
150-3212 Converter Assembly
159-1549 Converter (Power)

Solution:

If this condition occurs, it can be corrected with the addition of a 194-4190 Harness Assembly. This new harness assembly is inserted in line with the existing voltage converter and the existing voltage-converter wiring harness. One end of the 194-4190 Harness Assembly is plugged into the existing voltage converter. The remaining end of the 194-4190 Harness Assembly is connected to the existing voltage-converter wiring harness. Ensure that the 194-4190 Harness Assembly is properly secured and routed in order to prevent damage from any sharp edges.
