Start By:

  1. Remove the torque converter.

  1. Use Tooling (A) in order to remove retaining ring (1) from the shaft.

  2. Remove planetary carrier (2).

  3. Remove retainer (4) and retaining ring (3) from planetary carrier (2).

  4. Use a hammer and a punch in order to push pin (8) into shaft (7).

  5. Remove the following components from the planetary carrier: shaft (7), washers (9) and planetary gear (6).

  6. Remove bearing (5) from planetary gear (6).

  7. Remove pin (8) from shaft (7).

  8. Position the torque converter on suitable blocking.

  9. Remove sensor (10) and outlet relief valve (11).

  10. Remove bolt (13) and yoke (12). Remove bolts (14).

  11. Attach Tooling (B) and a suitable lifting device to housing assembly (15). The weight of housing assembly (15) is approximately 84 kg (185 lb). Use Tooling (C) in order to separate housing assembly (15) from the torque converter assembly. Remove housing assembly (15).

  12. Remove retaining ring (18) and gear (19) from housing (15).

  13. Remove retaining ring (16) and bearing (17) from housing (15).

  14. Remove O-ring seal (23) and lip seal (20).

  15. Remove bolts (21) and gear (22).

  16. Remove two bolts (24) with washers from opposite sides of the torque converter. The bolt locations are marked “drain”. Drain the oil from the torque converter.

  17. Use Tooling (D) in order to remove retaining ring (25).

  18. Remove shaft (26) and the bearing.

  19. Remove seal ring (28) from shaft (26).

  20. Remove bearing (29) from shaft (26).

  21. Remove bearing race (27) from the shaft, if necessary.

    Note: Bearing race (27) will be destroyed upon removal.

  22. Remove the remaining bolts. Install Tooling (C) in impeller (30).

  23. Install Tooling (E) and attach a suitable lifting device to the impeller. Tighten Tooling (C) evenly, and remove the impeller with the carrier. The weight of the impeller with the carrier is approximately 30 kg (65 lb).


    NOTICE

    Use care in disassembly of the torque converter, in order to avoid damage to the stator.

  24. Remove bolts (31). Remove stator (32) from pins (33).

  25. Use suitable blocks in order to support the torque converter assembly close to the center. Use Tooling (F) in order to remove carrier (34).

  26. Remove seal ring (35) and pins (33).

  27. Remove the bolts that fasten retainer (37) to impeller (30). Use Tooling (G) in order to remove retainer (37).

  28. Remove dowel (38) from impeller (30).

  29. Use Tooling (H) in order to remove carrier (36) with the bearing from impeller (30).

  30. Remove bearing (39) from carrier (36).

  31. Use Tooling (J) in order to remove retaining ring (40) from the output flange.

  32. Remove turbine wheel (41) from housing (42) and from the output flange. Remove the spacer that is under turbine wheel (41).

  33. Use two people in order to reposition housing (42). The weight of the housing (42) is approximately 35 kg (75 lb). Remove stop pins (43).

  34. Compress retaining ring (44). Remove ring gear (45). Remove the retaining ring.

  35. Install Tooling (C) in output flange (46). Tighten Tooling (C) evenly, and remove the output flange (46) and oil ring (47) from the housing.

  36. Remove seal ring (50) from carrier (49) on output flange (46).

  37. If necessary, use a chisel in order to break carrier (49). Remove the carrier.

    Note: If the carrier is removed, the component is destroyed.

  38. Use Tooling (F) in order to remove two bearings (48) from output flange (46).

  39. Remove bolts (49) and retainer (50) from housing (42).

  40. Use Tooling (H) in order to remove bearing (51) from housing (42).
