Reference: Refer to Specifications, "Torque Converter"
in the Service Manual for your machine.

Note: Use Step 1 and Step 2 to verify that the torque divider is capable of an efficient operation. Then, follow the procedure for assembly of the torque converter.

  1. Check the clearance between the turbine wheel and the stator by performing the following steps:

      Illustration 1g01249338

    1. Place stator (32) on turbine wheel (41). While you hold the stator against one side of the turbine wheel, measure the clearance between the stator and the turbine wheel with Tooling (K).

    2. The correct diameter across the components between the stator and the turbine wheel is 1.76 mm to 1.94 mm (0.070 in to 0.077 in). Check the clearance at four different points on the turbine wheel. The maximum clearance for any measurement is 2.15 mm (0.085 in).

    3. The running clearance is one half of the clearance across the diameters. The correct running clearance is 0.88 mm to 0.97 mm (0.035 in to 0.039 in). The maximum running clearance for any measurement is 1.08 mm (0.043 in).

  2. Check the clearance between the impeller wheel and the stator by performing the following steps:

      Illustration 2g00837224

    1. Use a 7 in outside micrometer or an 8 in outside micrometer for outside diameters to measure the diameter of the flange at four points on the stator. Record the minimum reading.

      Illustration 3g01263477

    2. Use a 7 in inside micrometer or an 8 in inside micrometer to measure the diameter of the flange at four points on impeller (30). Record the maximum reading.

    3. The clearance across the diameters is the difference between the readings from Step 2.b and from Step 2.a. The correct clearance between the stator and the impeller wheel is 1.17 mm to 1.32 mm (0.047 in to 0.052 in). The maximum clearance for any measurement is 1.54 mm (0.061 in).

    4. The running clearance is one half of the clearance across the diameters. The correct running clearance is 0.59 mm to 0.66 mm (0.024 in to 0.026 in). The maximum running clearance for any measurement is 1.54 mm (0.061 in).

  5. Use Tooling (F) to install two bearings (48) in output flange (46) by performing the following steps:

    1. Install one bearing (48) to a 25.4 mm (1.00 in) depth below the surface of output flange (46).

    2. Install one bearing (48) even with the surface of the splined end of output flange (46).

    3. After you install bearings (48), check the inside diameter of the bearings. The correct inside diameter after installation is 44.501 ± 0.013 mm (1.7520 ± 0.0005 in).

  6. Raise the temperature of carrier (49). Install carrier (49) on output flange (46). Install seal ring (50) on the carrier.

  7. Lubricate the seal ring (50). Pull the ends of the seal ring together. Install output flange (46) in the housing.

Note: Do not damage the seals during the assembly of the components.
