3500 GENERATOR SET ENGINES Caterpillar

Flywheel

Usage:

Remove And Install Flywheel

Typical Example

1. Fasten a hoist to flywheel (1) with tooling (A).

2. Remove two bolts (2) and install two 1" -14 NF guide bolts 11 in. long in their place. Remove the remainder of bolts (2), and remove flywheel (1). The weight of the flywheel is 167 Kg (370 lb).

NOTE: The following steps are for the installation of the flywheel.

3. If the flywheel ring gear is damaged, a replacement can be made as follows:

a. Remove the damaged ring gear from the flywheel.

b. Heat the new ring gear to a maximum temperature of 316°C (600°F) and install it on the flywheel so the chamfer of the gear teeth will be toward the engine when the flywheel is installed.

4. Install two 1" -14 NC guide bolts 11 in. long in the end of the crankshaft.

5. Fasten a hoist and tooling (A) to flywheel (1) and position it on the guide bolts.

NOTE: Make sure the mark on the flywheel is in alignment with the mark on the crankshaft.

6. Put 2P2506 Thread Lubricant on the threads of bolts (2). Install ten bolts (2) to hold the flywheel in place.

7. Remove the hoist and tooling (A) and the guide bolts. Install the remaining bolts (2). Tighten bolts (2) to a torque of 1150 ± 60 N·m (840 ± 44 lb ft).

NOTE: If necessary, check flywheel runout. See the topic, Flywheel Runout in the 3500 Generator Set Engines Specifications Manual, Form No. SENR3878.
