Note: Perform the following procedure with the cold planer on the ground.
Note: If the optional water spray kit is installed, the pump will activate when the auxiliary electrical control is activated.
Note: After adjusting the Drum Tilt Angle of the cutting head, it may be necessary to adjust the skids so that the skids contact the ground.
Illustration 21 | g00947396 |
The depth of the cut can be adjusted by raising or lowering the skids on the cold planer.
- Lower the planer drum on level ground. Check that both sides of the drum rest flat on the ground. Adjust the skids if the skids do not lie flat on the ground.
- Once the skids lie flat, ensure that the values that are indicated on the depth gauge are zero.
- If the values are not zero, loosen the screws (2) and reposition the indicators. Tighten the screws when the values that are indicated are zero.

Illustration 23 g00956282 - The height of the skids may also be adjusted by rotating the cams (3) in 90° increments. Remove the bolts (4) in order to rotate the cams. Reinstall the bolts after you rotate the cams.
Note: This adjustment may be necessary in order to set the depth gauges to zero.

Note: Periodically, the depth indicators (1) should be adjusted in order to ensure accuracy. Perform the following steps in order to adjust the indicators.
NOTICE |
---|
Whenever possible, perform cuts in a straight line. Cutting around curves could result in excessive edge bit wear and drum wear. Inspect edge bits and drum more frequently if you must cut around curves. |
Cutting bits are hot after operation. Allow the cutting bits to cool before handling the cutting bits. Handling the cutting bits before the cutting bits are cool could result in personal injury. |
Check the cutting bits after every hour of operation. Check the cutting bits for free rotation. Clean the cutting bits with solvent, if necessary. Check the cutting bits for wear. Replace the cutting bits, if necessary.
- Adjust the skids to the required planing depth.
- Position the planer over the working area.
Try to position the planer head as central as possible to the frame in order to ensure even loading and balance.
Show/hide tableIllustration 24 g00944944 - Set the engine speed to LOW IDLE with the cold planer raised off the ground approximately
15 cm (6 inches) (1). - Activate the drum control on the host machine. The planer drum will start to rotate. Then activate the continuous flow function on the host machine.
For older model host machines, the HIGH FLOW control will need to be activated. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual of the host machine for additional information.
- Gradually increase the engine speed to HIGH IDLE.
Note: Always operate the engine at HIGH IDLE when you are cutting with the planer.
- Tilt the cold planer forward until the front of the skids contact the ground (2).
- Slowly lower the loader arms of the machine until the drum of the cold planer penetrates the ground. Continue to lower the planer and tilt the quick coupler assembly until the skids rest fully on the ground (3).
- Lower the loader arms until the front wheels of the machine are approximately
10 cm (4 inches) from the ground. For tracked machines (MTL, CTL, and CWL), do not raise the front end of the machine off the ground. Only apply DOWNWARD pressure to the planer but always keep the complete tracks (MTL and CTL) or the wheels (CWL) of the machine in contact with the ground.
- Slowly move the host machine forward until a constant speed is reached. Maintain an operating speed that does not stall the planer drum.
Note: If the drum stalls during a cut, back up the machine slightly. Allow the drum to reach full speed before you continue the cut.
- When you reach the end of a cut, deactivate the auxiliary control.
- Raise the loader arms and rack back the cold planer in order to exit the cut.

When you are cutting in adjacent strips, adjust the skid (5) to zero. The skid should slide on the surface that was previously cut. The skid (4) should be set to the cutting depth that is desired.
Performance Pressure Gauge Operation
Note: Performance Pressure Gauge is not available on all models and and option on some models. Consult your Cat dealer for more information.
Illustration 26 | g02947967 |
(6) Gauge Base (non-moving)
(7) Knurled Area (8) Colored Sleeve (9) Indicator Sleeve |
- The pressure gauge needs to be reset to the ZERO position the first time it is used on a specific host machine. It is recommended that you reset the gauge at the start of each working day.
- To reset the pressure gauge to the ZERO position, pull the colored sleeve fully OUTWARD towards the gauge mounting by gripping the knurled ring.
- When first operating the planer, the pressure gauge will not indicate any meaningful readings until the planer is loaded and allowed to stall.
- Once the planer has been stalled, the system pressure will reach maximum and the colored sleeve will move into the calibrated position. To achieve the calibration, you will need to overload and stall the planer drum.
Note: Once calibrated, the colored sleeve will not move side-to-side during continued operation. The colored sleeve may rotate due to vibration but it will not affect the reading.
- Productivity and performance is seen by looking at the color scale uncovered as the indicator sleeve moves. The sleeve will constantly move over the colored scale so the operator can focus to achieve the highest output rate.
- Yellow Triangle Range: Planer is under-loaded, forward speed can be increased.
- Green Rectangle Range: Planer is ideally loaded, maintain forward speed.
- Red Line Range: Planer is over-loaded, reduce forward speed.
Note: Occasional, exposure of the red zone is expected during normal operation. Frequent or constant exposure will increase the risk of stalling.
Tilt and Float Function for B-Series Cold Planers
This allows the operator to select a floating or powered setting for the Tilt function.
- To select the float operation, pull out the control knob and turn through 90° until the spring pin locates into the SHALLOW groove (10). While in float operation, the tilt cylinder will freely move in or out and allow the planer to follow changes in the ground contour without operator input.
Show/hide table
Illustration 28 g02947961 - To select the powered tilt operation, pull out the control knob and turn through 90° until the spring pin locates into the DEEP groove (11). While in powered operation, the tilt cylinder is hydraulically controlled by the operator ans stays locked in position even with changes in ground contour.

Operational Guidelines for Better Performance and Work Tool Life
- When performing shallow cuts, the planer should be kept tilted forward.
- If the planer drum continually stalls or jams, it is possibly due to operating at too high of a forward speed. Back off the planer slightly to allow the drum to turn and then continue operating at a slower forward speed.
- If the area to be planed requires multiple planing cuts that are side by side, planing is best achieved with the following procedures:
- For the first cut, align the planer centrally to the host machine carriage.
- To obtain a perfectly flat planed surface with no steps between each cut, adjust the depth skid running in the previous cut to the 0 (Zero) position setting. Adjusting the depth skid is especially important if the spoil has been removed. If the spoil is still in the cut, some adjustment upward from the 0 (Zero) position maybe be required depending on conditions.
- Where possible on second or subsequent cuts, operate with the host machine on a good surface and not on the loose cut material. This can normally be achieved by side shifting the planer head. The wheels can then straddle the first cut.
Show/hide table
Illustration 29 g00955606 - When you are cutting in adjacent strips, adjust the skid (5) to the 0 (Zero) position. The skid should slide on the surface that was previously cut. The skid (4) should be set to the cutting depth that is desired.
- During any period of operation, check the cutting bits every 1 hour. Failure to keep the cutting bits in a good, free rotating condition will affect the overall performance. The cutting bits must be able to turn freely by hand. (Note, always wear protective gloves the cutting bits will be hot after operation). If the cutting bits do not rotate, remove the affected bits and clean the bits. Some operators keep spare cutting bits soaking in a suitable container of lubricating fluid for quick changes.
- Cutting bits that are damaged or missing, must be replaced immediately. Performance of the planer will be reduced and damage may extend to the bit holders or the drum if the cutting bits are not replaced. Refer to the following bit wear examples for additional information:
- The remaining part of the carbide tip is shaped symmetrically. The body has a uniform, tapered shape. The body has enough bulk to support the carbide core. Bit is worn and needs replacing.
Show/hide table
Illustration 31 g02874558 (b.) Cutting Bit that has worked on soft materials - If a bit has been used on an overly soft material, the body will wear quicker than the tip. The tip will end up snapping off. Additionally, the altered bit shape will increase bit holder wear. Bit is worn and needs replacing.
Show/hide table
Illustration 32 g02874559 (c.) Cutting bit that has not been rotating properly - The bits that are subject to uneven use, will wear out fast. Usually, wear of this kind is due to the bits not free rotating in the holders. The wear may be due to a worn tooth holder. Wear may also be the presence of debris material between the shank of the tooth and the seat in which the tooth is fitted. In this instance, clean the seat and lubricate with fluid. Tooth is worn and needs replacing.
Note: The above bit examples are for the standard Asphalt Bits. The same principles apply to all bit types.
Show/hide tableIllustration 30 g02874557 (a.) Features of an ideally worn tooth - The remaining part of the carbide tip is shaped symmetrically. The body has a uniform, tapered shape. The body has enough bulk to support the carbide core. Bit is worn and needs replacing.
- Any damaged or worn bit holders must be replaced. Contact your Cat dealer for complete information on this process.
- When operating the planer, be aware of all obstructions such as drains, manhole covers and other steel obstructions. These types of obstructions are the biggest cause for bit and drum damage.
- Check the depth skids for wear. If the skids are worn, the cutting depth scale may be affected. Perform a short test for cutting depth. Set the depth skids so that the cutting bits are almost touching the surface to be cut. Adjust the depth scales for both the left and the right side according to the 0 ((zero)) position depth settings.
- Always make cuts in a straight line. Do not make cuts around tight curves. Stop the cut and lift the planer. Reposition the host machine and the planer to be in line with the direction of the curve.
- To reduce vibration through the planer and to help maintain constant cutting depth in most operating conditions, it is recommended to power the loader arms down to lift the front wheels off the ground approximately
10 cm (4 inches) . For the (MTL, CTL, and CWL) lifting the front of the machine is not recommended. Always keep the complete length of the track in contact with the ground while still giving downward pressure to the planer. - Downward pressure will be required more with the wider planers, when working shallow cuts, or when working on harder surfaces like concrete.
Removal Of Obstructions From Work Tool
Note: When an obstruction prevents the work tool from operating, use the following procedure.
If the work tool becomes obstructed, first attempt to remove the obstruction by operating the work tool in the REVERSE direction. Once the obstruction has been removed, operate the work tool in the FORWARD direction.
Do not use an auxiliary override with this work tool. The work tool can be fully powered even if the arm bar is raised and the operator has exited the cab. Severe injury or death could occur. Do not exit the cab until the work tool and the host machine have been shutdown and the parking brake is engaged. |
Personal injury can result from hydraulic oil pressure and hot oil. Hydraulic oil pressure can remain in the hydraulic system after the engine has been stopped. Serious injury can be caused if this pressure is not released before any service is done on the hydraulic system. Make sure all of the work tools have been lowered to the ground, and the oil is cool before removing any components or lines. Remove the oil filler cap only when the engine is stopped, and the filler cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand. |
If the obstruction is not removable by operating the work tool in the REVERSE direction, refer to the following procedures for removing obstructions:
Procedure To Remove Obstructions For All Models of SSL, MTL, CTL, and CWL
Note: It is necessary to release the hydraulic system pressure of the host machine before you connect or before you disconnect the hydraulic lines of the work tool to the machine. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual of the host machine for the proper procedure in order to release the hydraulic system pressure of the host machine.
- Raise the armrest and exit the machine. Ensure that the parking brake is engaged before exiting the machine.
- Disconnect all of the quick connect couplers between the host machine and the work tool.
- Connect the male quick connect coupler and the female quick connect coupler on the hoses together.
Connecting the hoses together will prevent any pressure differential from causing any unexpected hydraulic movement.
- Remove the obstruction from the work tool.
- Disconnect the male quick connect coupler and the female quick connect coupler on the hoses.
- Connect all of the quick connect couplers between the host machine and the work tool.
- Return to the machine.
- Lower the armrest and return to normal operation of the host machine and the work tool.
