Adjustment Procedures And Lubrication Recommendations For Drive Pulleys On Caterpillar Fuel Injection Test Bench{0652}

Usage:

The adjustment procedures and lubrication recommendations for the variable drive pulleys on the Caterpillar Fuel Injection Test Bench are available on an instruction sheet that is sent with each replacement pulley. However, the adjustment procedure is not given in either the Test Bench Operation and Maintenance Book or in Special Instruction Form SEHS7281 that accompany (go with) the Test benches. Also the lubrication interval on page 6A of the Operation and Maintenance Book is too long. This article corrects these two items. Add the information that follows to your Test Bench Operation and Maintenance Book.

Variable Pulley Lubrication

1. Use 5P960 Grease or one of the greases given on page 6A of the Operation and Maintenance Book.

2. Lubricate the fittings on both pulleys every two weeks. Do not use too much grease. See the illustration.

3. Use the procedure given on Page 6A of the Operation and Maintenance Book to get thorough distribution of grease inside the pulley.

NOTE: Failure to completely lubricate the upper pulley can result in a reduction of the variable speed range.

Pulley Adjustment

NOTE: Before the pulley adjustment is made, lubricate both pulleys. Poor lubrication can cause the upper pulley to not return to its fully closed position. This will cause the minimum speed to be too high.

NOTE: Benches with dial-type tachometers must be operated in "neutral" to adjust the pulley.

To adjust the pulley, benches with digital tachometers must be operated in "low range". The output shaft will turn during the operation on benches with digital tachometers. Install an injection pump on the bench to give support for the flexible coupling or remove the coupling during the adjustment procedure.

1. Put the speed range selector in low range for benches with digital tachometers, and turn the degree wheel by hand to be sure the gears are engaged. If the bench has a dial-type tachometer put the speed range selector in neutral.

2. Use a 1/8" hexagonal wrench and loosen set screws. See the illustration.

3. Move the short low speed stop arm towards the pulley. Move the long high speed stop arm towards the chain wheel. See the illustration.

4. Start the drive motor.

------ WARNING! ------

Use caution around the drive pulleys after the drive motor has been started.

-------WARNING!-------

5. Adjust the speed to 35 RPM for 60 HZ machines (42 RPM for 50 HZ machines).

6. Adjust the low speed stop arm until a lug on the thread cover hits the stop. Tighten the set screw. See the illustration.

7. Increase the speed with the variable speed control to 350 RPM for 60 HZ machines (420 RPM for 50 HZ machines).

8. Adjust the high speed arm until a lug on the thread cover hits the stop. Tighten the set screw. See the illustration.
