Operating the machine beyond its stability limit could result in a tip over or failure of the work tool. Check the proposed lift with the load chart. Do not attempt the lift if the longitudinal stability limit of the machine will be exceeded. Tip over or failure of the work tool could cause personnel injury or death. |
The longitudinal stability indicator provides visual signals and audible signals in order to indicate the limit of the forward stability of the machine. The longitudinal stability indicator is powered by the machine electrical system which is activated when the engine start switch key is turned to the ON position.
Note: Always test the longitudinal stability indicator before you use the machine to lift a load. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Longitudinal Stability Indicator - Test" for more information.
Note: When the machine is performing a lift, always observe the longitudinal stability indicator and obey the longitudinal stability indicator. Do not wait until the alarm sounds.
Use the appropriate load chart in order to verify that the intended lift operation is within the capability of the machine. The load charts are located on the instrument panel. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Lifting Capacities" for more detailed information.

Indicator lamps on the visual display give an indication of the forward stability of the machine. The forward stability of the machine will depend on these factors:
- Weight of the attachment and load
- Angle of the boom
- Length of the boom
When the engine start switch is turned to the ON position, all indicators will be illuminated. The indicators will be illuminated for two to three seconds and the audible alarm will sound. This indicates that the longitudinal stability indicator (LSI) is performing an internal self-check. If the system is functioning correctly, then all of the indicators except indicator (1) will be extinguished and the audible alarm will cease.
(1) This is a green indicator. This indicator shows that the longitudinal stability indicator (LSI) is receiving power and that the LSI is operating correctly. Indicator (1) is illuminated at all times.
(2) This is a green 50% load indicator.
(3) This is a green 60% load indicator.
(4) This is a green 65% load indicator.
(5) This is a green 70% load indicator.
(6) This is a green 75% load indicator.
(7) This is a green 80% load indicator.
(8 and 9) These indicators are amber 85% load indicators.
(10 and 11) These indicators are red 100% load indicators.
Extending the boom or lowering a raised boom further increases the outreach of the load. This can reduce the forward stability of the machine. Machine tip over could result. If the longitudinal stability indicator shows that the machine stability limit is being approached, do not lower or further extend the boom. Retract the boom before lowering. Machine tip over could cause personal injury or death to the operator or other personnel in the work area. |
The visual display unit indicates the following sequences:
- When one or more of the green indicators are illuminated, the machine has forward stability. As the load on the machine increases from 50% to 80%, the green indicators will illuminate progressively. When all of the green indicators are illuminated, the lift operation is still within machine capability, but extra caution is necessary.
- When all green indicators plus one amber indicator are illuminated, the limit for the forward stability of the machine is threatened.
- When all green indicators plus both amber indicators are illuminated, and all the lamps are flashing the limit for the forward stability of the machine has been reached. When the load on the machine reaches 85%, an alarm will beep at approximately half second intervals. Extra caution is necessary. Do not increase the outreach of the load.
- When all green indicators, both amber indicators plus one red indicator are illuminated, the limit for the forward stability of the machine has been exceeded.
- When all green indicators, both amber indicators plus both red indicators are illuminated, the limit for the forward stability of the machine has been exceeded. An audible signal will sound continuously when both red indicators are illuminated. When this condition occurs do not proceed with the lift operation. Retract the boom if the boom is extended. Lower the boom if the boom is elevated.
The visual alarms and the audible alarm may operate momentarily when the machine is travelling with a load on the work tool which is close to the maximum weight for the machine. This may occur more frequently on uneven ground.
When a reverse force is exerted on the boom green indicators (3) and (4) illuminate. This occurs after the boom has been lowered to the ground and the joystick control is held forward. The system will return to normal operation when the boom is raised. This condition can be avoided if you release the joystick control immediately. When the load is resting securely on the ground, release the joystick control.
Press switch (12) before you operate the machine in order to test the longitudinal stability indicator. All the lamps will illuminate and the audible alarm will sound. Do not operate the machine if the longitudinal stability indicator is not functioning correctly.

Items (13), (14) and (15) are located at the rear of the display module. Refer to Systems Operation, Testing and Adjusting, RENR5163, "Longitudinal Stability Indicator System" for information on calibrating the display module.
(13) The "CAL" on/off switch is used to select the calibration mode.
(14 and 15) The "SPAN" switch and "SPAN + %" switch are used in the calibration mode to obtain the calibration point for setting the indicators.
Examples of Situations that Create Instability
- Overloading the machine with the boom at constant reach creates instability. Always reduce the reach of the boom as the weight of the load is increased.
- Extending the boom with a constant load creates instability. Move the machine as near to the intended load as possible before attempting to lift the load. Never extend the boom when the weight of the load can be reduced.
- Lowering an extended boom and a loaded boom can cause instability. Always retract the boom before the boom is lowered.
- Attempting to lift a load that is too heavy for the reach of the boom creates instability. Move the machine as near to the intended load as possible.
The following examples show a series of situations that would cause the lights on the longitudinal stability indicator to change. As the stability of the machine is threatened, the green lights progressively change color through amber lights to red lights.
