Removal Procedure
Start By:
- Remove the rocker shaft assembly and pushrods. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Rocker Shaft and Pushrods - Remove".
- Remove the lifters. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Lifter Group - Remove and Install".
- Remove the front housing. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Housing (Front) - Remove".

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates. |
- Remove bolts (1) that attach the camshaft bearing to the cylinder block.
Note: The camshaft assembly contains the following components: camshaft, camshaft bearing and gear

- For installation purposes, note the position of the timing marks on the idler gear (2) and on the camshaft gear (3) .
- Remove camshaft assembly (4) from the cylinder block.
Note: If the camshaft assembly is replaced, the fuel injection pump timing must be checked. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Fuel Injection Timing - Check".
