Continuity Test

  1. Connect the 8T-0500 Continuity Test Light between a ground and the terminal of the glow plug (1). Choose the glow plug that is farthest away from the battery. Turn the starting aid switch to the ON position.

If the circuit is correct, the test light should turn on.

If the test light does not turn on, inspect the circuit for loose connections, broken wires, and other damage.

  1. Disconnect connector (2) from the glow plugs.

  1. Use the 6V-7070 Digital Multimeter to measure the resistance between terminal (1) and the ground for the glow plug. The point for the ground should be as close to the glow plug as possible.

Maximum resistance for the glow plugs:

    3003 and 3013 Engines ... 0.0128 ohms
    3014 and 3024 Engines ... 0.0096 ohms

Note: Older engines were equipped with a 27 ampere glow plug. The following specifications are for the 27 ampere glow plugs.

Maximum resistance for the glow plugs:

    3003 and 3013 Engines ... 0.0185 ohms
    3014 and 3024 Engines ... 0.0139 ohms

  1. Connect the test light to the positive terminal of the battery and to the terminal of the glow plug (1). If the light turns on, the continuity in the glow plug is correct.

If the light does not turn on, replace the glow plug.

Repeat this step for each glow plug.

Operation Test

  1. Disconnect the cable for the power supply from connector (2). Remove the connector from the terminal of the glow plug (1) .

  1. Connect the leads of the 6V-7070 Digital Multimeter between the cable for the power supply and the terminal of a glow plug. Turn on the starting aid switch. Observe the amperage reading of the multimeter. Then, connect the leads of the multimeter between the terminal of the glow plug and a ground. Measure the voltage.

Maximum current through the glow plugs:

    3003 and 3013 Engines ... 39 amperes
    3014 and 3024 Engines ... 52 amperes

Note: Older engines were equipped with a 27 ampere glow plug. The following specifications are for the 27 ampere glow plugs.

Maximum current through the glow plugs:

    3003 and 3013 Engines ... 85 amperes
    3014 and 3024 Engines ... 110 amperes

The voltage should not drop more than 0.5 volts for all engines.

Perform Step 2 for each glow plug.

Note: If the 27 ampere glow plugs are out of specification, replace the 27 ampere glow plugs with the 13 ampere glow plugs. The 13 ampere glow plug is the service replacement for the 27 ampere glow plug.

  1. If the multimeter reading is below the specified amperes, the glow plug should be replaced. If there is no reading, replace the glow plug.

If the voltage reading of the multimeter is zero, inspect the starting aid switch and the power supply for faulty components and loose connections.

  1. When the tests are complete, install the connector to the terminals of the glow plugs. Connect the cable for the power supply to the glow plugs.
