Introduction
This Special Instruction provides information that is necessary in order to install the wedge socket.
Do not perform any procedure that is outlined in this publication until you have read the information and you understand the information. Also, do not order any parts until you have read the information and you understand the information.
Safety
Read the safety information and follow all of the safety information before the installation of the wedge socket.
- Always inspect the socket, the wedge and the pin before installation.
- Do not use parts with visible cracks.
- Do not use modified parts or substituted parts.
- Repair minor nicks or gouges to the socket or the pin by lightly grinding the surfaces until the surfaces are smooth. Do not reduce the original dimension by more than 10 percent.
Check for Cable Diameter
Illustration 1 | g00692457 |
The template for checking the cable diameter is cast into the wedge. The proper size of wire rope is determined when the following criteria are met.
- The wire rope will pass through the "GO" hole in the wedge.
- The wire rope will not pass through the "NO GO" hole in the wedge.
Installation Instructions
Improper installation of the wedge socket may result in loss of load control. Personal injury or death may result from loss of load control. Ensure proper wedge and wedge socket installation. |
Personal injury or death can result from worn wire rope cable. Worn or frayed cable could break causing injury. Check the wire rope cable. If cable is worn or is frayed install a new cable. |
- Align the live end of the wire rope with the centerline of pin (1) .

- Make a large loop around wedge (2) and insert the end of the wire rope and wedge (2) through the socket.

- Secure the dead end of the wire rope with clamp (3). Tighten nuts (4) to a torque of 128 N·m (95 lb ft).
Note: Make sure that the wedge and the clamp are installed correctly. Refer to illustrations 4 and 5.
Note: Make sure that length (T) of the dead end of the wire rope is a minimum of six rope diameters and make sure that length (T) is not less than 150 mm (6 inch).

Incorrect installation of the wedge and the clamp (A) The wire rope is backward in the socket. (B) The wedge is installed backward. (C) The tail of the wire rope is clamped to the live line. |
- Use a hammer to seat the wedge and the wire rope into the socket as deep as possible prior to applying the first load.
- Apply the first load in order to seat the wedge and the wire rope in the socket. This load should be equal or greater than the loads that are expected during normal use.
