Start By:

  1. Remove the differential and bevel gear. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Differential and Bevel Gear - Remove" for the machine that is being serviced.

  1. Use Tooling (A) to remove bearing cone (1) from differential case (2) .

    Follow the recommended procedure and use all recommended tooling to release the spring force.

  1. Place an alignment mark across the case assembly for assembly purposes. Remove bolts (3) from differential case (2) .

    Note: Leave two bolts (3) installed in order to prevent the assembly from separating in an uncontrolled manner. Refer to illustration 3.

  1. Slowly loosen remaining bolts (3). Springs inside the differential will force cover (4) to separate from differential case (2) .

  1. Remove bolts (3) from the housing.

  1. Remove cover assembly (4) from differential case (2) .

  1. Position cover assembly (4) upside-down, as shown.

  1. Remove flat head screws (5) from plate (6) .

  1. Remove plate (6) from cover assembly (4) .

  1. Remove cover assembly (4) from thrust ring (7) .

  1. Remove flat head screws (8) .

  1. Remove thrust washer (9) from cover assembly (4) .

  1. Remove springs (10) from differential case (2) .

  1. Remove friction discs (11) from differential case (2) .

  1. Remove bevel gear (12) from differential case (2) .

  1. Install Tooling (B) and a suitable lifting device, as shown.

  1. Remove bolts (13) in order to separate differential case (2) .

  1. Use a suitable lifting device to separate the bevel gear and differential case from the rest of the differential case. The weight of the bevel gear and differential case is approximately 68 kg (150 lb).

  1. Remove side gear (14) from spider assembly (15) .

  1. Remove the spider assembly (15) from differential case (2) .

  1. Remove washer (16), spider gear (17), and sleeve bearing (18) from spider (19) .

  1. Remove bolts (20) that secure the bevel gear to the differential case.

  1. Install Tooling (C) and place the assembly in a suitable press, as shown.

  1. Press the bevel gear (21) off the differential case (2) .

  1. Install Tooling (D), as shown.

  1. Use Tooling (D) to remove bearing cone (22) from differential case (2) .

  1. Remove flat head screws (23) .

  1. Remove thrust washer (24) from differential carrier (2) .
