Start By:

  1. Remove the crankcase guard. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, SENR9124, "Crankcase Guard - Remove and Install" for the correct procedure.
  2. Remove the front drive shaft. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Front Drive Shaft - Remove and Install". The information is in this manual.

------ WARNING! ------

At operating temperature, the hydraulic tank is hot and under pressure.

Hot oil and components can cause personal injury. Do not allow hot oil or components to contact skin.

Remove the filler cap only when the engine is stopped, and the filler cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand. Remove the filler cap slowly in order to relieve pressure.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

No clearance for person in this area when machine turns. Severe injury or death from crushing could occur. Connect steering frame lock between front and rear frames before lifting, transporting, or servicing machine in articulation area. Disconnect lock and secure before resuming operation.

  1. Turn off the engine. Apply the foot brake several times in order to relieve the pressure in the brake system.

  1. Use Tooling (A) in order to raise the front of the machine. Position Tooling (B) under the front drive axle.

  1. Remove both front tires and rims. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Tire and Rim - Remove and Install". The information is in this manual.

  1. Make sure that Tooling (B) is secure under the front drive axle.

  1. Disconnect breather line (3) from the front drive axle. Remove the O-ring seal from breather line (3) . Remove two bolts (2) and the washers that secure guard (4) to guard assembly (1) .

  1. Remove two bolts (5) and the washers that secure guard assembly (1) to the front drive axle.

  1. Disconnect hydraulic brake line (6) from hydraulic fitting (7) . Remove the O-ring seal from the hose.

  1. Attach Tooling (C) , Tooling (D) , an appropriate spreader bar and a hoist to both sides of front drive axle (8) .

  1. Remove four bolts (9) and the washers that secure front drive axle (8) to mounting plate (10) . Remove four bolts (11) and the washers that secure front drive axle (8) to front suspension arm (12) .

  1. Disconnect hydraulic hose (14) from hydraulic fitting (13) . Remove the O-ring seal from the hose. Remove bolt (16) , the washer and hose clamp (15) that secures hydraulic hose (14) to front drive axle (8) .

  1. Remove four bolts (18) and the washers that secure front drive axle (8) to mounting plate (17) . Remove four bolts (20) and the washers that secure front drive axle (8) to front suspension arm (19) .

  1. Attach an appropriate lifting strap (21) to front suspension arm (19) . Attach a lifting strap (21) to front suspension arm (12) . Use the hoist in order to lower front drive axle (8) from the machine and on the hydraulic jack.

  1. Remove two dowels (22) from the mounting boss on each end of front drive axle (8) .

  1. Remove two hollow dowels (23) from each of the front suspension arms.

  1. Remove the tooling from the front drive axle. Use the hydraulic jack in order to remove the front drive axle from the machine. the weight of the front drive axle is 1045 kg (2304 lb) .
