NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.


  1. Inspect all parts and clean all parts. If any parts are worn or damaged, use new Caterpillar parts for replacement.

  1. Use Tooling (B) in order to position the front drive axle under the machine. the weight of the front drive axle is 1045 kg (2304 lb) .

  1. Install two hollow dowels (23) to each of the front suspension arms.

  1. Install two dowels (22) to the mounting boss on each end of front drive axle (8) .

  1. Attach Tooling (C) , Tooling (D) , an appropriate spreader bar and a hoist to both sides of front drive axle (8) .

  1. Use the hoist and the floor jack in order to raise front drive axle (8) to the suspension arms and the suspension cylinders. Make sure that the hollow dowels between the front drive axle and the front suspension arms are installed in both components. Make sure that the dowels between the front drive axle and the mounting plates that are on the suspension cylinders are installed in both components. Remove the nylon lifting straps from both front suspension arms.

  1. Install four bolts (18) and the washers that secure front drive axle (8) to mounting plate (17) . Tighten bolts (18) to a torque of 270 ± 40 N·m (199 ± 30 lb ft) .

  1. Install four bolts (20) and the washers that secure front drive axle (8) to front suspension arm (19) . Tighten bolts (20) to a torque of 900 ± 100 N·m (664 ± 74 lb ft) .

  1. Install four bolts (9) and the washers that secure front drive axle (8) to mounting plate (10) . Tighten bolts (9) to a torque of 270 ± 40 N·m (199 ± 30 lb ft) .

  1. Install four bolts (11) and the washers that secure front drive axle (8) to front suspension arm (12) . Tighten bolts (11) to a torque of 900 ± 100 N·m (664 ± 74 lb ft) .

  1. Install the O-ring seal to the hose. Connect hydraulic hose (14) to hydraulic fitting (13) . Install bolt (16) , the washer and hose clamp (15) that secures hydraulic hose (14) to front drive axle (8) .

  1. Install the O-ring seal to the hose. Connect hydraulic brake line (6) to hydraulic fitting (7) .

  1. Position guard assembly (1) to the front drive axle. Install two bolts (5) and the washers that secure guard assembly (1) to the front drive axle.

  1. Install the O-ring seal in breather line (3) . Connect breather line (3) to the front drive axle. Position guard (4) to guard assembly (1) . Install two bolts (2) and the washers that secure guard (4) to guard assembly (1) .

  1. Remove Tooling (C) , Tooling (D) , the spreader bar and the hoist from both sides of front drive axle (8) .

  1. Install both front tires and rims. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Tire and Rim - Remove and Install". The information is in this manual.

  1. The steering frame locks can be removed. Remove Tooling (B) from the front drive axle. Use Tooling (A) in order to lower the front of the machine. Remove Tooling (A) from the machine.

  1. Check the fluid level in the hydraulic system and add any oil that is required. See Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU7028 for the correct procedure.

  1. Install the front drive shaft. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Front Drive Shaft - Remove and Install". The information is in this manual.
  2. Install the crankcase guard. Refer to Disassembly and AssemblySENR9124, "Crankcase Guard - Remove and Install" for the correct procedure.
