Sudden movement or accidental starting of the machine can cause personal injury or death to persons on or near the machine. To prevent personal injury or death, perform the following: Park the machine on a smooth, level surface. Lower the bucket and/or attachments to the ground and engage the parking brake. Stop the engine and remove the key. Block the wheels and install the steering frame lock. |

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates. |
The ride control valve can be the cause of excessive lift cylinder drift. This procedure will isolate the ride control valve in the hydraulic system. Disconnect all lines to the ride control valve before your perform the drift test for the lift cylinders.
- Move the steering frame lock to the locked position.
- Lower the bucket to the ground.
- Release the pressure in the implement hydraulic system and in the ride control system. Do not start the engine. Turn the engine start switch key to the ON position and move the ride control switch to the ON position. Move the hydraulic control levers to all positions in order to release the pressure in the hydraulic system. Place the lift control lever in the FLOAT position. Place the tilt control lever in the HOLD position.
- Turn the engine start switch key to the OFF position.
- Push in the plunger for the hydraulic tank breaker relief valve in order to relieve the pressure in the hydraulic tank.
- Release the hydraulic pressure before any component is loosened, tightened, removed, or adjusted.
- Remove hose assemblies (1) and (3) .

- Install a 6V-9512 Face Seal Plug in the ends of hose assemblies (1) and (3). Install a 5K-9090 O-Ring Seal and a 6V-9833 Cap on the two elbows.
- Remove hose assemblies (2) and (5) from the ride control valve .
- Install a 6V-9509 Face Seal Plug in the ends of hose assemblies (2) and (5). Install a 3J-1907 O-Ring Seal and a 6V-9830 Cap on the two elbows.
- Unplug solenoid (4) .
- Remove hose assembly (6) from the shuttle valve.

- Install a 6V-9509 Face Seal Plug in the end of the hose assembly (6). Install a 3J-1907 O-Ring Seal and a 6V-9830 Cap on the elbow.
- Start the engine. Warm the hydraulic oil to normal operating temperature of 54° to 82°C (129° to 180°F). Raise the bucket to the maximum height.
- Place the lift control lever in the HOLD position and stop the engine.
- Check the distance of rod movement according to the following chart.
Show/hide table
Table 2 Approximate Lift Cylinder Drift     Oil Temperature     Maximum Drift     Time
38° to 49°C (100° to 121°F)
13.0 mm (.51 inch)    5.0 minutes
50° to 65°C (122° to 149°F)
13.0 mm (.51 inch)    2.7 minutes
66°C (150°F) or more
13.0 mm (.51 inch)    1.7 minutes
- If isolating the ride control valve eliminated the drift problem, inspect the ride control valve. Check for scoring in the main valve stem and in the valve body. Check for O-rings that are worn or damaged on the solenoid valve.
- When the testing is complete, repeat Steps 2 through 6. Remove the plugs, the seals and the caps. Connect hose assemblies (1), (2), (3), (5) and (6). Connect solenoid plug (4) .
