------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury can result from performing service on the track roller frame.

Refer to Special Instruction, SMHS8273 for inspection and removal procedures before performing any service.

----------------------

Note: For the correct assembly of Tooling (A) and Tooling (B), see the topic "Recoil Spring - Remove" in this module. All of the part numbers in the story are part of Tooling (A) and Tooling (B).

------ WARNING! ------

Improper assembly of parts that are spring loaded can cause bodily injury.

To prevent possible injury, follow the established assembly procedure and wear protective equipment.

----------------------

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury or death can result from a compressed recoil spring being released suddenly using incorrect disassembly procedures.

A recoil spring that is still held in compression can result in the recoil spring being released unexpectedly with extreme force which could cause serious injury or death.

Make sure that the correct disassembly procedure is used, if a front track roller frame that has a crack in the parent metal or weld connection (or a tubular section that has separated from the front of the frame assembly) when the recoil spring is still held in compression.

Refer to Special Instruction, SMHS8273 which contains the disassembly procedure that must be used to decrease the possibility of injury while performing service on the track roller frame.

----------------------

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury can result from being struck by parts propelled by a released spring force.

Make sure to wear all necessary protective equipment.

Follow the recommended procedure and use all recommended tooling to release the spring force.

Typical example

  1. Install tube (21) in recoil spring (20). The weight of the tube is 66 kg (145 lb).

    Illustration 2g00500968

    Illustration 3g00500966

    NOTICE

Do not damage the threads on the inside of the front track roller frame when you install the recoil spring.

    NOTICE

Tube (21) slides in recoil spring (20). Recoil spring (20) must be kept level so that the spring does not slide off the tube unexpectedly. If the spring slides unexpectedly, you could drop the spring.

  1. Tube (21) and recoil spring (20) together weigh 194 kg (427 lb). Put a bar in position in the tube and the recoil spring, as shown. See Illustration 3. Use a lifting strap on the bar next to the spring and attach a hoist to the bar. Counterbalance the tube and the recoil spring at the opposite end of the bar. Use the hoist to install tube (21) and recoil spring (20) in the front track roller frame.

    Illustration 4g00500965

    Illustration 5g00500964

  1. Attach a hoist to guide assembly (19) and install the guide assembly. The weight of the guide assembly is 30 kg (66 lb).

    Illustration 6g00500962

  1. Fasten a hoist to recoil spring retainer (4) and install the retainer. The weight of the retainer is 36 kg (80 lb). Put the retainer in position and install the retainer as far as possible with the use of a piece of bar stock. The bar stock is part of Tooling (A). There will be approximately 228.6 mm (9 inch) of the recoil spring retainer that sticks out of the front track roller frame.

    Illustration 7g00500939

    Tooling (B)

  1. Install Tooling (B) on the front track roller frame, as shown. See Illustration 7. Install the recoil spring and the guide in the following manner.

    1. Measure the distance from the plate to the face of the front track roller frame. Measure the plate at all four corners. Make an adjustment to 2J-3505 Nuts (14) so that all four corners of 6V-2168 Plate (17) are the same distance from the face of the front track roller frame.

      NOTICE

There must never be more than 12.7 mm (.5 inch) distance between the recoil spring and the spring retainer during the installation of the recoil spring.

    1. Slowly extend the cylinder rod in order to compress the recoil spring while recoil spring retainer (4) is installed with bar (18) .

    1. When the cylinder rod is fully extended, install the recoil spring retainer. Move the cylinder rod to the fully retracted position.

    1. Remove 2J-3505 Nuts (14) and 9H-1031 Washers (13) from 1M-6766 Studs (5) .

Note: Tooling (A) and Tooling (B) are identical except for the FT1408 Spacer (11) and FT1409 Spacer (12) .

    Tooling (A)

  1. Install Tooling (A) in the following manner in order to install the recoil spring and the guide:

    1. Install FT1408 Spacer (11), FT1409 Spacer (12), 9H-1031 Washers (18), and 2J-3505 Nuts (14) on 1M-6766 Studs (5) .

    1. Measure the distance from the plate to the face of the front track roller frame. Measure the plate at all four corners. Make an adjustment to 2J-3505 Nuts (14) so that all four corners of 6V-2168 Plate (16) are the same distance from the face of the front track roller frame.

    1. Slowly extend the cylinder rod in order to compress the recoil spring while recoil spring retainer (4) is installed with bar (18) .

      Illustration 9g00502189

      Tooling (A)

    1. Install the recoil spring retainer until surface (22) is 2.0 ± 1.5 mm (.079 ± .059 inch) below the surface of the front track roller frame. Surface (22) is the area at the base of the notches in the retainer.

    1. Remove Tooling (A) .

    Illustration 10g00545866

  1. Use bolts (2) and install stops (3) in position.

    Illustration 11g00545871

  1. Install eyebolt (1) and the cable assembly. Be sure that the eyebolt is 30 ± 10 degrees from horizontal, as shown. See Illustration 11.

End By: Install the track adjuster.
