Assemble and Install Inverted Duo-Cone Seal Kits
This instruction gives the procedure for installing Inverted Duo-Cone Seals.
Note: Refer to Special Instruction, SEHS8484, "Tool and Spec Charts for Inverted and Conventional Duo-Cone Seal Kits" for the appropriate installation tool.
It is most important to follow the correct procedure to assemble the Duo-Cone Seals. It is equally important to follow the correct procedure to install the seals. Many of the Duo-Cone Seal failures are a direct result of mistakes in the assembly or the installation of the seal components.

- Remove any oil, dust or other foreign material from toric rings (3), shaft ramp (5), seal ring ramp (7), and lip (6) of shaft seal ring (2) and shaft (1). Use Isopropyl Alcohol and a clean cloth in order to clean all surfaces.
Note: Never allow oil to get on rubber toric ring (3), shaft ramp (5), seal ring ramp (7), or lip (6) before the seal rings are placed in the final assembled position (Step 13).
Show/hide tableAvoid prolonged skin contact with isopropyl alcohol. Avoid breathing the vapors in enclosed areas without adequate ventilation and do not smoke.
Isopropyl alcohol is flammable. Do not use near open flame, welding operations, or around heated surfaces exceeding
482°C (900°F) .Show/hide tableIllustration 3 g00471739 Show/hide tableIllustration 4 g00471740 - Put toric ring (3) on seal ring (2), at the bottom of seal ring ramp (7) and against seal ring retaining lip (6).
Note: Make sure that toric ring (3) does not twist. The toric ring must be straight on seal ring (2). Be careful when you work on the rubber toric ring. Nicks, cuts, and scratches can cause leaks.
Show/hide tableIllustration 5 g00471741 - Put toric stabilizer (4) on shaft (1), as shown. See Illustration 5.

Illustration 6 g00471742 - Put installation tool (9) on shaft seal ring (2) with toric ring (3). Refer to Special Instruction, SMHS8484, "Tool and Spec Charts for Inverted and Conventional Duo-Cone Seal Kits" for the proper installation tool. Lower the rings into a container of Isopropyl Alcohol until all surfaces of toric ring (3) are wet.

NOTICE Do not use Stanisol. Do not use any liquid that leaves an oil film, or any liquid that does not evaporate quickly.
Show/hide tableIllustration 7 g00471743 Show/hide tableIllustration 8 g00471744 - All of the surfaces of rubber toric ring (3) must still be wet. Use installation tool (9) in order to position shaft seal ring (2) and toric ring (3) squarely on shaft (1), as shown. See Illustration 8. Apply even pressure with a slight motion of twisting in order to slide toric ring (3) and shaft seal ring (2) down shaft (1) until installation tool (9) contacts the end of shaft (1).

Illustration 9 g00471972 - Check assembled height (A) all the way around the circumference. The difference in height around the ring must not be more than
0.8 mm (0.032 inch) . Use gauge (13) in order to check the assembled height. This gauge is included in each Duo-Cone Seal Kit. See Special Instruction, SMHS8484.Show/hide tableIllustration 10 g00471974 - Do not push on seal ring (2) directly in order to make small adjustments. If small adjustments are needed, use installation tool (9).
Note: Toric ring (3) can twist during installation if the ring is not completely wet or if there are burrs on shaft (1).
Note: Toric rings (3) must never slip on the ramps of either shaft seal ring (2) or shaft (1). Once the rings are in place, the rings must only rotate on the ramps.
Show/hide tableNOTICE Misalignment, twists, or bulges of the rubber toric ring will cause Duo-Cone Seal failures. If the correct installation is not obvious, remove the seal from the shaft and repeat Steps 4 through 7.
Show/hide tableIllustration 11 g00471975 - Put rubber O-Ring (12) on retainer seal ring (11). Make sure that rubber O-Ring (12) is not twisted.

Illustration 12 g00471976 Show/hide tableIllustration 13 g00471977 - Lubricate rubber O-Ring (12) for easier assembly into retainer (10).
Note: Do not use too much lubricant. The lubricant must not get on shaft ramp (5) or rubber toric ring (3) during the assembly process. See Step 13.
Use the same installation tool (9) that was used to assemble seal ring (2) and rubber toric ring (3) on shaft (1).
Use this tool and a press. Insert seal ring (11) and rubber O-Ring (12) in retainer (10) until rubber O-Ring (12) is against the bottom of the bore in retainer (10).
Show/hide tableIllustration 14 g00472048 - Check assembled height (B) all the way around the circumference. The difference in height around the ring must not be more than
0.3 mm (0.012 inch) .Show/hide tableIllustration 15 g00472050 Show/hide tableIllustration 16 g00472054 - Clean seal ring faces (8) of seal rings (2) and (11). No particles of any kind are permissible on the sealing surfaces.

Illustration 17 g00472062 - Put a thin film of clean oil on the seal faces. Use an applicator in order to distribute the oil evenly. Be careful not to get any oil on the toric rings.

Illustration 18 g00472063 - Select correct alignment sleeve (14). Refer to Special Instruction, SEHS8484, "Tool and Spec Charts for Inverted and Conventional Duo-Cone Seal Kits" for the appropriate alignment sleeve.
- Make sure that rubber O-Ring (15) is installed in retainer (10). Insert alignment sleeve (14) into the bores of retainer (10) and seal ring (11). Slip the entire assembly over shaft (1).
- Move the parts toward each other.
Show/hide table
NOTICE Do not slam the parts together. A hard impact can damage the seal components. The seal components can be scratched or broken.
- Securely fasten the parts, once the parts are in place. Remove alignment sleeve (14).
