Turbocharger - Remove and Install

Usage:

583R 2XS

Removal Procedure

Start By:

  1. Remove the muffler. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Muffler - Remove and Install".
  2. Remove the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Air Cleaner - Remove and Install".
  3. Remove the right engine side guard. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Engine Side Guards - Remove and Install".


NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Hot oil and hot components can cause personal injury. Do not allow hot oil or hot components to contact skin.

At operating temperature, the engine coolant is hot and under pressure.

Steam can cause personal injury.

Check the coolant level only after the engine has been stopped and the cooling system pressure cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.

Remove the cooling system pressure cap slowly to relieve pressure.

Cooling system conditioner contains alkali. Avoid contact with the skin and eyes to prevent personal injury.

  1. Remove nut (3), and washer (4) from stud (2) on aftercooler (1) .

  1. Remove two bolts (5) .

  1. Loosen the nut on tube assembly (6) at oil filter base (9) .

  1. Remove tube assembly (6) and the gasket.

  1. Remove two bolts (7), the two washers, tube assembly (8) and the gasket from the turbocharger.

  1. Use a suitable lifting device and a strap to support turbocharger (11) .

  1. Remove two locknuts (12) and two bolts (13) .

  1. Remove exhaust pipe support (14), exhaust coupling (18) and sealing ring (17) .

  1. Remove turbocharger (11) and outlet elbow (10) .

  1. Remove O-ring seals (15) from outlet elbow (10) .

  1. Remove outlet elbow (10) and O-ring seals (16) from turbocharger (11) .

Installation Procedure

  1. Check the condition of the gaskets, the O-ring seals and the sealing ring that was removed. If the O-ring seals, the gaskets or the sealing ring is worn or damaged, use a new replacement part.

  1. Install O-ring seals (16) and O-ring seals (15) on outlet elbow (10) .

    Note: Lubricate the bores of the outlet elbow with a suitable lubricant before installing the O-ring seals.

  1. Install the outlet elbow on turbocharger (11) .

  1. Use a suitable lifting device and a strap to support the turbocharger and the outlet elbow.

  1. Install turbocharger (11) and outlet elbow (10) .

  1. Install sealing ring (17) and exhaust coupling (18) in exhaust pipe support (14) .

  1. Install the exhaust pipe support, the sealing ring and the exhaust coupling on turbocharger (11) .

    Note: Apply 5P-3931 Anti-Seize Compound to the threads of mounting bolts (13) prior to installing the bolts.

  1. Install two bolts (13) and two locknuts (12) .

  1. Install the gasket on tube assembly (8) .

  1. Install two bolts (7), the washers and tube assembly (8) to the turbocharger.

  1. Install tube assembly (6) on oil filter base (9) .

  1. Install the gasket and tube assembly (6) on the turbocharger with two bolts (5) .

  1. Install washer (4) and nut (3) onto stud (2) on aftercooler (1) .

End By:

  1. Install the right engine side guard. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Engine Side Guards - Remove and Install".
  2. Install the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Air Cleaner - Remove and Install".
  3. Install the muffler. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Muffler - Remove and Install".
