Final Drive Oil - Change

Usage:

580 7CN

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Note: This procedure is only for the 580 Wheel Harvester. Only the front four wheels have final drives. The rear wheels are not equipped with final drives.

  1. Position the final drive so that drain plug (2) is facing downward.

  1. Remove the drain plug and allow the oil to drain into a suitable container. Clean the drain plug and install the drain plug.

  1. Filler plug (1) will be horizontal to the centerline of the wheel. Remove the filler plug.

  1. Fill the final drive with oil to the bottom of the filler plug opening.

Reference: Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Lubricant Viscosities and Refill Capacities" for the correct type of oil and for the correct amount of oil.

If the specified amount of oil will not fit into the final drive, install the filler plug. Run the machine on level ground for a few minutes in order to equalize the oil level. Remove the filler plug and install the remaining oil.

  1. Install the filler plug. Operate the machine for a few minutes. Check the oil level. The oil level should be at the bottom of the filler plug opening.

Note: If the oil level is higher than the filler plug opening, do not allow the oil to drain to the level of the filler plug opening.

  1. Repeat the procedure for the other three final drives.
