Probable Causes For Powering Down Problems Caterpillar

Probable Causes For Powering Down Problems

Usage:

TRACK-TYPE TRACTORS583R (2XS) PIPELAYERS

Problem:

Winches will not power down under no load conditions.

Solution:

There are two probable causes that should be checked when the winches will not power down under no load conditions.

1. Check linkage adjustments.

The linkages may be binding during operation or the linkages may be out of adjustment which will cause the winch control valve to not shift correctly. Refer to Service Magazine, SEPD0447, December 7, 1999, "Proper Adjustment Guidelines For Winch Control Linkages" for proper adjustment procedures.

2. Check the sprag clutch.

The sprag clutch may have gone bad. A simple test of the sprag clutch is to move the control lever to the power down position and observe whether the drive motor is turning. If the motor is turning and the winch does not move, the sprag clutch is the probable cause. Refer to Service Manual Module, SENR1811, Disassembly and Assembly, "Winch - Disassemble" for the proper removal procedure of the sprag clutch.
