Air Filter Precleaner Modification Can Increase Filter Element Life Caterpillar

Air Filter Precleaner Modification Can Increase Filter Element Life

Usage:

OFF-HIGHWAY TRUCKS793 (3SJ),
793B (1HL) TRUCKS

Problem:

In this application the 7E-7376 Body Assembly (precleaner) is not operating at peak efficiency. This can result in shortened primary air filter life.

The precleaner is part of the engine air cleaner group. The precleaner separates larger dirt particles from the air prior to the air going through the primary air filter element. The more efficient the precleaner assembly, the fewer dirt particles remaining for the air filter element to remove. Maximum primary air filter element life results when the precleaner assembly is operating at peak efficiency.

Solution:

In this application (793, 793B), the precleaner can be made to operate at a higher efficiency. This will result in extended primary air filter element life.

To increase the efficiency, plug 90 tubes (out of 270 total) per 9Y-8930 Air Cleaner Group (there are two 9Y-8930 Air Cleaner Groups per truck) with special cap plugs. The special cap plugs (Arden Fasteners, part numbers Cap Plug Number 5 and Cap Plug Number 12) can be obtained from an Arden Fasteners distributor or contact Arden Fasteners at phone number 1-708-543-6636 or Fax number 1-708-543-7590. Two different part number plugs are required to plug both sides of the body assembly (precleaner). The tubes to be plugged are those in the shaded area in the illustration. Plugging 90 tubes per air cleaner group should result in a 20 percent increase in primary air filter element life.

NOTE: For maximum air filter element life and for minimal risk of engine damage from dirt entry through the air intake system, ONLY SERVICE THE AIR FILTER WHEN THE AIR FILTER INDICATOR SO INDICATES. Do not service the air filter more (or less) frequently than called for by the air filter indicator.

NOTE: This technique applies ONLY to 793 and 793B Trucks. This technique does not apply to the new 793C Truck.
