Caterpillar uses 30W gas engine oil in the actuators for tests at the factory. This oil is left in the engine for shipping. If a different oil is going to be used on site, the factory oil needs to be drained and the actuator refilled with the makeup oil. This is done to prevent mixing of different types of oil. Generally new crankcase oil is used.
For optimum performance, Caterpillar recommends 136-9642 Governor Oil (5W40 synthetic oil). This applies to all self-contained oil supply actuators used on 3600 Diesel Engines.
