  1. Use Tooling (E) for the ring grooves. Use Tooling (C) and install piston rings (8) onto piston (7). Install the top ring with the side that is marked UP 1 toward the top of the piston. Install the intermediate ring with the side that is marked UP 2 toward the top of the piston.

  2. Install oil ring spring wire and insert pin and install outer ring (9). The oil ring spring ends must be assembled 180 degrees from the ring end gap. After the rings have been installed, rotate the rings so that the end gaps are located 120 degrees from each other. Oil ring end gap must be in the pin bore plane.

  3. Coat connecting rod (6) and wrist pin (5) with clean engine oil. Install connecting rod (6) into piston (7). Install wrist pin (5) into piston (7) and connecting rod (6). Use Tooling (B) to install both retaining rings (4). Position retaining rings (4) with the opening toward the bottom of the piston.

  4. Install O-ring seals (3) onto liner (2).

Note: The liner O-rings are not compatible with petroleum-based products. Ensure that the liner is free of rust preventative and the liner O-rings are only lubricated with a soapy solution. Failure to do so will result in O-ring degradation and external coolant leaks.

  5. Coat piston (7) and the piston rings (8) with clean engine oil. Install Tooling (D) onto piston (6). Tighten Tooling (D) to compress the piston rings.

  6. Coat inside of the liner (2) with clean engine oil. Attach Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device onto the connecting rod. The weight of the connecting rod and the piston assembly is approximately 31 kg (69 lb). Install the connecting rod and the piston assembly into the bottom side of liner (2).

  7. Remove Tooling (D) from liner (2).

Note: Do not permit the piston to go past the top dead center position. If the piston goes past the top dead center position, the piston rings will lock into the cuff ring bore.
