NRS Temperature Sensor on Certain C3.4B Engines {1000, 1408} Caterpillar

NRS Temperature Sensor on Certain C3.4B Engines {1000, 1408}

Usage:

3.4B IOPU CJ3
Engine
C3.4B (S/N: CJG1-6452)
Engine Package
3.4B (S/N: CJ31-981)

Certain C3.4B engines are now being built without the NOx Reduction System (NRS) temperature sensor installed.

For engines built with the NRS temperature sensor installed, the existing temperature sensor and engine wiring harness should remain installed to the engine.

Note: Ensure that the harness for the temperature sensor is positioned away from heat sources and other engine components. Ensure that the harness for the temperature sensor is adequately secured with suitable cable straps.

New engine software is available that removes the functionality of the NRS temperature sensor on some engines. Refer to "Service Software Files" on SIS Web for the latest engine software part numbers. Refer to Troubleshooting, ECM Software - Install for the correct procedure to install the new software.

New 511-5487 Wiring Harness replaces existing 463-8783 Wiring Harness.

New 511-7010 Wiring Harness replaces existing 456-4687 Wiring Harness.

Note: The new engine wiring harness does not have an electrical connector for the NRS temperature sensor.

If necessary, perform the following procedure to remove the existing engine wiring harness and install the new engine wiring harness.

  1. Turn the battery disconnect switch to the OFF position.

  2. Disconnect the harness assembly for the application from the engine wiring harness.

  3. Cut the cable straps from the existing engine wiring harness. Disconnect all sensors and relevant electrical components from the engine wiring harness. Refer to the relevant sections of Disassembly and Assembly for more information. Remove the existing engine wiring harness from the engine.

Note: Mark the position of the cable straps.

  4. Position the new engine wiring harness on the engine. Connect all sensors and relevant electrical components to the engine wiring harness. Refer to the relevant sections of Disassembly and Assembly for more information.

  5. Install new cable straps to the engine wiring harness.

Note: Ensure that the engine wiring harness is not subjected to any undue stress.

  6. Connect the harness assembly for the application to the engine wiring harness.
