Prelubrication Pump Problem

Usage:

C280-16 A4F
Use this procedure in order to troubleshoot low prelube oil pressure. Also, use this procedure if the following event code is active.

Table 1
Event Code
CDL Code and Description  Conditions which Generate this Code  System Response
3029-31
Engine start inhibited, pre-lube system issue
The Electronic Control Module (ECM) did not detect the minimum pressure for the programmed duration that is for the engine prelube sequence.  The code is logged.
The engine is not allowed to start.
3551-17
Engine Oil Priming State : Low - least severe (1)

Probable Causes

  • Engine oil level

  • Electrical power to the prelube pump motor

  • Inadequate prelubrication pressure

Recommended Actions

Note: The procedures have been listed in order of probability. Complete the procedures in the order of the listed test steps.

Table 2
Troubleshooting Test Steps  Values  Results

1. Check for Codes

A. Connect Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) to the service tool connector. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electronic Service Tools", if necessary.

B. Download the "Product Status Report" from the engine ECM before performing any troubleshooting or clearing diagnostic trouble codes.

C. Determine if the event code that directed to this story is present.

D. Look for active diagnostic codes that are associated with the system for the event code that directed to this story.

Codes

3029-31

3551-17

Result: An associated code is present.

Repair: Troubleshoot any associated codes before continuing with this test.

Result: An event code is present.

Proceed to the next step.

Result: No active codes

STOP

2. Check the Engine Oil Level

Level

Result: The engine oil is not low.

Proceed to the next step.

Result: The engine oil level is low.

Repair: Add engine oil in order to obtain the correct engine oil level.
Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Engine Oil" for the recommendations of engine oil.

Start the engine. Inspect the exterior of the engine for oil leaks. Repair any oil leaks.

If the problem is not resolved, proceed to the next step.

3. Check the Electrical Power to the Prelube Pump Motor

A. Ensure that the prelube pump motor is wired correctly.
Refer to Troubleshooting, "Prelubrication - Test" for information that is related to the pump circuit.

Power

Result: The pump is powered when called for.

Proceed to the next step.

Result: The pump is not receiving power when called for.

Repair: Repair or replace the faulty circuit component.

If the problem is not resolved, proceed to the next step.

4. Check for Inadequate Prelubrication Pressure

A. Monitor the following parameter during the prelube cycle:
"Engine Oil Pressure (abs)"

NOTE: The ECM must detect an oil pressure of 41 kPa (6 psi) for the programmed "Engine Ready to Start Prelube Duration" before the engine is cranked.

Pressure

Result: The pressure is NOT OK.

Repair: Repair the pump or replace the pump.
