Procedure

------ DANGER! ------

High voltage may be present. Work on this equipment must be performed by authorized trained personnel. Failure to disconnect the power source before performing maintenance or removing modules exposes personnel to electrical potential. Bodily contact with electrical potential will cause serious personal injury or death.

NOTICE

Electrostatic discharge can damage integrated circuits or semiconductors if you touch the connector pins. When not in use, keep modules in static shielded bags. Follow these guidelines when you handle modules:

Allow a minimum of 5 minutes for capacitors to discharge.

Touch a grounded object to discharge static potential.

Wear a wrist-strap grounding device.

Do not touch the connector pins.

Do not touch circuit components inside the module.

If available, use a static-safe work station.

  1. Remove power from the UPS by following the appropriate shutdown routine. Allow at least 5 minutes for the capacitors to discharge to remove any stored energy.

ReferenceOperation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU8516, "Single UPS Startup and Shutdown" and "Parallel UPS Startup and Shutdown".

  1. Remove the hood (6) for ventilating that is on top of the power module.

    1. Remove the screw (5) on the front of the module.

Note: Disconnect the wire from the fan (4) that is on the hood.

    1. Remove the hood.

    Illustration 4g02141309

  1. Disconnect the following from the circuit board:

    • Power connections (7)

    • Wires and ribbon cables (8)

    Illustration 5g02141434

  1. Loosen the four screws (9) that are in the area of the heat sink.

Note: Do not remove the screws.

  1. Remove the two screws (10) in the bottom corners of the board.

  1. Lift slightly on the assembly to remove the board and the heat sink.

  1. Remove the heat sink from the board by removing the two screws (11) .

    Illustration 7g02141321

The surface of the heat sink has been cleaned of grease.

  1. By using the cloth (2), clean the grease from the surface of the heat sink. Refer to Illustration 1.

    Illustration 8g02141322

The grease has been applied to the base of the IGBT.

  1. Apply the thermal grease to the base of the IGBT by using the needle (2). Refer to Illustration 1.

    Spatula

    (3a) Straight face

    (3b) "Another module" face

    Illustration 10g02141327

The grease has been spread on the IGBT.

  1. Spread the grease into a thin layer by using the straight face (3a) of the spatula. Refer to Illustration 9.

Hold the face at a slight angle to the base of the IGBT and spread the grease evenly across the face.

    Illustration 11g02141328

The spatula should be held perpendicular to the IGBT.

    Illustration 12g02141330

The grease has been properly applied to the IGBT.

  1. Hold the "Another module" face (3b) of the spatula perpendicular to the base of the IGBT and drag the spatula once across the base. Refer to Illustration 9 and Illustration 11. This action will create a grooved surface in the grease. Refer to Illustration 12.

  1. Mount the heat sink to the circuit board.

Note: Torque the screws to 5.4 N·m (47.79 lb in).

  1. Place the assembly inside the unit and tighten the screws (8) .

  1. Connect the wires, ribbon cables, and power connections. Refer to Illustration 4.

Note: The connectors that are used on these boards ensure that correct polarity of the power is maintained.

  1. Install the hood.
