- Engine:
- 3408E (S/N: 7PR1-UP)
- Industrial Engine:
- 3412E IND (S/N: BDT1-UP)
- 3412E (S/N: Z2D1-UP; 4CR1-UP)
Some 3408E and 3412E engines have issues with low power and erratic behavior. Continuous Process Improvements have been made as discussed below.
Most low power and erratic behavior have occurred after the injectors have been replaced or after an engine overhaul.
The following issues have been observed:
- The engine fails dyno tests for low power and low fuel rate
- The engine misfires and has a rough idle
- Reman injector sets are replaced with new injectors but still do not meet engine power requirements.
- "Full Load Setting" (FLS) and "Full Torque Setting" (FTS) values are readjusted to meet required power specification.
Process Improvements have been implemented to Reman injectors to reduce engine low power and misfire issues.
Note: Due to tight power tolerances on the 3400 HEUI engines, some engines will require a "FLS/FTS" reset to achieve the specified power requirements. Refer to Special Instruction, REHS1385 for the recommended values. If power is not restored, please work with your local dealer and the Dealer Solution Network for additional troubleshooting before replacing new or Reman injectors.
Refer to Troubleshooting, SENR1065, "3408E and 3412E Industrial Engines " for guidelines on troubleshooting the "Low Power", "Low Response to Throttle", and "No Response to Throttle" issues. Dealers must refer to Special Instruction, REHS1385 for new adjustment values for the FLS and FTS before the Reman injectors are replaced. If the Electronic Control Module (ECM) has been replaced during the engine overhaul, then compare the values on the engine information plate to the following Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) parameters:
- "FRC Offset"
- "Full Load Setting (FLS)"
- "Full Torque Setting (FTS)"
