Procedure for Cleaning Ash from the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) for Certain Caterpillar Engines{108F, 1091}

Usage:

C15 B5R
Engine:
C13 (S/N: LEE1-UP)
C15 (S/N: SDP1-UP; B5R1-UP)
C7 (S/N: C7S1-UP)
C9 (S/N: MFF1-UP; C9S1-UP)

Introduction

Do not perform any procedure in this Special Instruction until you read this information and you understand this information.

------ WARNING! ------

Wear goggles, gloves, protective clothing, and a National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) approved P95 or N95 half-face respirator when handling a used Diesel Particulate Filter or Catalytic Converter Muffler. Failure to do so could result in personal injury.

----------------------

------ WARNING! ------

The muffler, catalytic converter/muffler, and diesel particulate filter will become extremely hot during engine operation. A hot muffler, catalytic converter/muffler and diesel particulate filter can cause serious burns. Allow adequate cooling time before working on or near the muffler, catalytic converter/muffler and diesel particulate filter.

----------------------

Accumulation of Ash in the Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF)

Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF) require periodic removal of ash that accumulates from engine oil.

Refer to Table 1 for the recommended ash cleaning intervals.

Table 1
Engine application     Ash cleaning interval
C7 and C9     150,000 to 175,000 mi.
C13 and C15     200,000 to 250,000 mi.

Cleaning Procedure

Follow this cleaning procedure for removal of the ash from a DPF. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual in order to obtain the proper mileage intervals and the hour intervals. The mileage intervals and the hour intervals determine when the cleaning is required.

  1. Connect the vehicle to Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) before the DPF is removed from the vehicle. Once the vehicle is connected to Cat ET then perform an ash service test. This is a manual regeneration. The test could take an hour.

  1. Remove the DPF from the vehicle. Disassemble the DPF. Refer to the engine Disassembly and Assembly Manual, "Diesel Particulate Filter - Disassemble" for the proper procedure to remove the DPF and disassemble the DPF.

Note: Identify all engine fault codes if black soot is discovered on the outlet side of the center section on the DPF. Reference the engine Troubleshooting Manual for problem identification and the disposition of the DPF.

  1. Clean the DPF. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU8083, "Diesel Particulate Filter - Clean" for the cleaning procedure of C7 and C9 engines. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU8087, "Diesel Particulate Filter - Clean" for the cleaning procedure of C13 and C15 engines.

  1. Measure the outer diameter of the center section of the DPF. Illustration 1 shows the outer diameter of the center section of the DPF. Use Table 2 to locate the appropriate cone and the proper adapters for your application.

Note: These adapters are part of the 319-2189 Diesel Particulate Filter Cleaner Gp .

Note: All the pressure ports and the thermocouple ports on the DPF must be plugged before cleaning.

Plug any other open ports on the DPF.

  1. Install a 2F-2990 Seal Plug or a 102-9379 Plug in all the open ports on the DPF.

  1. Assemble the DPF. Refer to the engine Disassembly and Assembly Manual, "Diesel Particulate Filter - Assemble" for the proper procedure to assemble the DPF.

  1. Reinstall the DPF onto the vehicle.

Ash Service Reset

The engine ash model must be reset whenever the filter is cleaned or replaced. This resets the DPF volume back to the "Clean State". The resetting will allow the regeneration of the DPF to function properly.

  1. Use Cat ET to access the configuration parameters. In the "System Settings" group of parameters, highlight the" Diesel Particulate Filter Ash Service Reset". Refer to Illustration 4 for the location of the " Diesel Particulate Filter Ash Service Reset". The value of the parameter should be "Not Reset".

  1. Click the "Change" button at the bottom of the screen. The change will require the Factory Passwords to be reset. Enter "Reason code 67".

  1. Enter the factory passwords. The value of the parameter will change to "Reset". This indicates that the "Ash model" was reset to "Zero Ash".
