Intake Manifold Air Pressure Is Low

Usage:

990K A9P
Use this procedure in order to troubleshoot low intake manifold air pressure. Also, use this procedure if the following event code is active or logged.

Table 1
CDL Code and Description  Conditions which Generate the Code  Comments
E1045(2) Low Intake Manifold Pressure  This code indicates that the intake manifold air pressure has dropped below the programmed threshold.  The code is logged.
Engine power is derated.

Troubleshooting Test Steps  Values  Results

1. Check for Codes

A. Connect Cat® Electronic Technician (ET) to the service tool connector.

B. Look for active codes that are associated with the system for the event code.

Codes

Result: An associated code is active.

Repair: Troubleshoot any associated codes before continuing with this test.

Result: A code is active or logged.

Proceed to Test Step 2.

2. Check the Air Filter for Restrictions

A. Visually inspect the air filter elements for plugging. Check that the air filter housing is in good repair. Ensure that any damage to the housing is not causing an air restriction at the air inlet.

B. Visually inspect the inlet piping between the air filter housing and the turbocharger. Check the piping for dents and damage that may cause restriction.

Air Filter Restrictions

Results: The air filters are OK and the inlet is not restricted. Proceed to Test Step 3.

Results: A restricted filter element is found.

Repair: Clean or replace the air filter element. Repair any inlet restriction that is found.

Verify that the problem has been resolved.

3. Inspect the Air Piping and Connections

A. Visually inspect the air intake system piping from the turbocharger compressor outlet to the inlet of the air-to-air aftercooler core. Also, inspect the piping from the outlet of the air-to-air aftercooler to the intake of the engine. Check that the piping is in good repair and check that the piping is not leaking.

B. Remove the rubber couplings for the piping that are on each side of the engine. Inspect the couplings for air leaks. If necessary, replace the couplings.

Air Piping and Connections

Result: The piping and rubber couplings are OK. Replace the couplings. Ensure that the clamps are tight. Verify that there are no leaks in the system.

Proceed to Test Step 4.

Result: A problem with the piping has been identified.

Repair: Replace the damaged piping or hose connections.

Verify that the repair eliminated the problem.

4. Inspect the Turbocharger

A. Remove the connection for the inlet air and the exhaust connection to the turbocharger.
B. Verify that the compressor wheel and the turbine wheel are spinning freely.
C. Verify that the compressor wheel and the turbine wheel are not damaged.

Turbocharger

Result: The turbocharger is not damaged.

Return to service.

Result: The turbocharger is damaged.

Repair: Replace the turbocharger.

Verify that the repair eliminated the problem.
