Note: The same assembly procedure is used for the front differential pinion and for the rear differential pinion.
- Install bearing cups (5) and (11) in pinion housing (1) .
Note: Reset the bearing cups with a suitable driver after the mating parts have reached a uniform temperature.
Illustration 3 | g00446303 |
Note: If you raise the temperature of the bearing cones, allow the parts to reach a uniform temperature. Then use a driver or a suitable press to reset the bearing cones. Lubricate the bearing cones with SAE 30 gear oil after the bearing cones have cooled in order to prevent rust on the bearing cones.
Note: If you lower the temperature of the bearing cups, allow the parts to reach a uniform temperature. Then use a driver or a suitable press to reset the bearing cups. Remove any frost and wipe the bearing cups dry. Lubricate the bearing cups with SAE 30 gear oil in order to prevent rust on the bearing cups.
- Install the O-ring on pinion housing (1) .
- Install bearing cone (7) on pinion shaft (12). Bearing cone (7) must be seated against the shoulder on pinion shaft (12) .
Note: Reset the bearing cone with a suitable driver after the mating parts have reached a uniform temperature.
- Install pinion shaft (12) in pinion housing (1). Press bearing cone (10) onto pinion shaft (12). Allow a small amount of end play to remain. Lubricate bearing cone (10). Lubricate washer (9) and nut (8). Install washer (9) and nut (8) .
- Position the assembly vertically in a soft jawed vise. Tighten the vise against the teeth on pinion shaft (12). Tighten an appropriate bolt and an appropriate nut through an outer bolt hole in pinion housing (1) .
- Place a 203 mm (8.0 inch) torque wrench on this bolt so that the torque wrench is in line with the center of pinion shaft (12) .
- While you rotate pinion housing (1) with the torque wrench, tighten nut (8) until the torque wrench reading corresponds with the value in table 4.

Table 4 Pinion Rolling Torque         Actual Torque at the Pinion     Torque Wrench Reading     New Bearings
1.24 to 3.39 N·m (11 to 30 lb in)
0.78 to 2.13 N·m (7 to 19 lb in)    Used Bearings
.62 to 1.69 N·m (5.50 to 15 lb in)
0.39 to 1.07 N·m (3.5 to 9.5 lb in)
- If the pinion rolling torque exceeds the specification, back off nut (8) by 1/8 turn and reseat bearing cone (10) and washer (9) against nut (8). Perform Steps 5 through 7 again.
- When the torque that is needed to turn the pinion is correct, stake nut (8). To stake nut (8), peen the collar that is on the nut into the key slot in pinion shaft (12). See Illustration 4 for the correct tooling and for the correct dimensions.
Note: The nut may be reused if the collar is not cracked during removal or during restaking.
- Install lip seal (6) in retainer (4). Make sure that the sealing lip is facing inward. Use SAE 30 gear oil to lubricate lip seal (6) .

- Install retainer (4) in position on the pinion housing (1). Install the washers and bolts (3) .
- Install guard (2) .
End By: Install the differential and the bevel gear.
