    ------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury can result from parts and/or covers under spring pressure.

Spring force will be released when covers are removed.

Be prepared to hold spring loaded covers as the bolts are loosened.

  1. Use Tooling (A) in order to compress valve spring (2). Remove valve keepers (1).

  2. Remove Tooling (A), the rotocoil, valve spring (2), and the valve. Place identification marks on the valves with respect to the location of the valve in the cylinder head.

  3. Use Tooling (B) in order to check the spring force. The minimum spring force for used springs is 207 N (47 lb). The length of the spring under test force is 44.86 mm (1.766 inch). The free length after the test is 52.0 mm (2.05 inch).

  4. Repeat Steps 1 through 3 for the remaining valves.

Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before assembly, all parts should be thoroughly cleaned in cleaning fluid. Allow the parts to air dry. Wiping cloths or rags should not be used to dry parts. Lint may be deposited on the parts which may cause later trouble. Inspect all parts. If any parts are worn or damaged, use new parts for replacement.

  1. Apply clean engine oil on the valve stems. Install the valve, valve spring (2), and the rotocoil in the cylinder head.

    ------ WARNING! ------

The valve keepers can be thrown from the valve when the valve spring compressor is released. Ensure that the valve keepers are properly installed on the valve stem. To help prevent personal injury, keep away from the front of the valve keepers and valve springs during the installation of the valves.

Spring force will be released when covers are removed.

Be prepared to hold spring loaded covers as the bolts are loosened.

  2. Place Tooling (B) in position on valve spring (2). Use Tooling (A) in order to install valve keeper (1).

  3. Remove Tooling (B) and hit the top of the valve with a plastic hammer. This will ensure that the valve keeper (1) is in the correct position on the valve.

  4. Repeat Steps 1 through 3 for remaining valves.

End By:

  1. Install the water temperature regulator. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Water Temperature Regulator - Install" for the engine that is being serviced.
