Engine Oil Pan - Remove and Install

Removal Procedure


NOTICE

Keep all parts clean from contaminants.

Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.



NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.


  1. Drain the engine oil. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Refill Capacities and Recommendation" for the capacity of the lubrication system.

  1. Remove drain plug (1) . Remove bolts (3) and pan assembly (2) from cylinder block (4) .

  1. Remove bolts (7) . Remove oil strainer (5) and O-ring seal (6) .

  1. Clean all mating surfaces thoroughly.

  1. Position O-ring seal (6) and oil strainer (5) . Install bolts (7) .

  1. Apply Tooling (A) to cylinder block (4) on the inside of the bolt hole pattern.

    Note: Apply Tooling (A) in a continuous bead in order to help prevent an oil leak.

  1. Position pan assembly (2) on the cylinder block. Apply Tooling (B) to bolts (3) . Install bolts (3) and tighten to a torque of 10 to 13 N·m (7 to 10 lb ft). Install drain plug (1) and tighten to a torque of 34 to 44 N·m (25 to 32 lb ft).

  1. Fill the crankcase with engine oil. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Refill Capacities and Recommendations" for the capacity of the lubrication system.
