Pistons and Connecting Rods - Remove

Start By:

  1. Remove the cylinder head. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Cylinder Head - Remove".
  2. Remove the engine oil pan. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Engine Oil Pan - Remove and Install".


NOTICE

Keep all parts clean from contaminants.

Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.


  1. Use Tooling (A) to remove the carbon ridge from the top inside surface of the cylinders.

  1. Rotate the crankshaft in a clockwise direction until the pistons that are being removed are at the bottom center position.

  1. Inspect the connecting rod and connecting rod cap for the proper identification marks.

    Note: The connecting rod and the connecting rod cap should have matching Numbers (X) on the side. Mark the connecting rod and the connecting rod cap, if necessary.

  1. Remove nuts (1) that hold connecting rod cap (2) to the connecting rod.

  1. Remove connecting rod cap (2) and the lower connecting rod bearing.

    Note: Use tape or rubber tubing on the connecting rod bolts to protect the crankshaft journals from damage.

  1. Push the pistons and the connecting rods through the top of the cylinder block.

  1. Note that Mark (Y) on the top of the piston faces the front. Note that Mark (Y) and Number (X) are on the right side for the purpose of reassembly.

  1. Repeat Steps 1 through 7 in order to remove the remaining pistons and connecting rods.
