Grounding Practices

Proper grounding for the engine electrical systems is necessary for engine performance and reliability. Improper grounding will cause uncontrolled electrical circuit paths. The paths will be unreliable.

Uncontrolled engine electrical circuit paths can result in damage to main bearings, crankshaft bearing journal surfaces, and aluminum components.

Uncontrolled electrical circuit paths can cause electrical noise.

A direct path to the battery must be used in order to ensure the proper functioning of the engine electrical systems and the engine-to-frame ground strap.

Ground wires and straps should be combined at ground studs. The ground studs should be dedicated for ground use only. At every 250 hours, inspect all of the engine grounds. All grounds should be tight and free of corrosion.


NOTICE

When boost starting an engine, follow the instructions in Operation And Maintenance Manual, "Engine Starting" to properly start the engine.

This engine is equipped with a 24 volt starting system. Use only equal voltage for boost starting. The use of a welder or higher will damage the electrical system.


The engine has several input components which are electronic. These components require an operating voltage.

Unlike many electronic systems of the past, this engine is tolerant to common external sources of electrical noise. However, electromechanical alarms can cause disruptions in the power supply. The engine's electronic control module (ECM) is powered through two power sources. One power source comes directly from the battery through a circuit breaker. The other power source comes through the keyswitch and another circuit breaker. Disconnect the power with the disconnect switch for the main power. The switch is by the battery box.
